Overview

Will Maine’s historic Schooner Inne Bed and Breakfast be a safe haven for the island kids boarding during the school year—or the end of them all?

Christina Romney is thirteen, with a personality that matches her unruly but charming tri-colored hair. She is about to start seventh grade, and for kids from Maine’s Burning Fog Island, that means leaving their little white schoolhouse for regular classrooms and life on the mainland. Everyone assures Christina it will be a fantastic year. Mainland school offers great advantages, after all: extracurricular activities other than boating and fishing, a gym, a cafeteria, and more kids her age. Best of all, this year the boarding students will live at the historic Schooner Inne, a former sea captain’s house (and now a bed and breakfast) recently bought by the school’s charismatic new principal and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Shevvington.

But Christina is apprehensive. She adores the wildness and excitement of her island life. Boarding with her island friends will surely help: Anya, a beautiful senior, fifteen-year-old Benji, the aspiring lobsterman, and his crush-worthy younger brother Michael. But Christina’s apprehension sharpens when Benji and Michael aren’t as friendly as they used to be on the island, and Anya starts acting so strangely it seems she is slowly losing her mind. Christina is increasingly certain the Shevvingtons are behind all of these changes. But no one else can see the Shevvingtons’ eerie behavior—not other teachers, not her parents, not even her fellow island kids. Is Anya the one going crazy in the Schooner Inne—or is it Christina?

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Caroline B. Cooney including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Set on the coast of Maine, this horror novel is the first of a projected trilogy. Four children--Christine, Anya, Ben and Michael--are attending high school on the mainland. The new principal, Mr. Shevvington, and his toady wife have offered to board all the children from Burning Fog Isle for the school year. The islanders know that the mainland kids will pick on them, but that trouble pales as Christine becomes aware of something evil: Anya seems to be going mad, and Christine is sure that the loathsome Shevvingtons are behind it. They seem to be conspiring with the ocean for a human sacrifice. Short on logic and suspense, this novel may appeal to diehard horror fans, but Stephen King or Dean Koontz would might be a better choice. Ages 11-15. (Aug.)

    Wolf-Blood- 3

Soft voices drag me like a hooked fish towards the surface of consciousness. My blue eyes flutter halfway open; I'm barely peering through my lashes, but everything's blurry. The voices stop. "Where...?" I croak (or try to. My throat and tongue feel like sandpaper and it probably sounds like "Wbhbebrbe"). Someone presses a cold cloth onto my forehead. "Shh..." they say, "don't talk." But I wanna talk. I raise my trembling hand and feebly brush them away. The person doesn't protest. "Guys, she's awake." The voice is feminine and faintly familiar. From the battle, I decide. Suddenly, my vision sharpens. The feminine voice belong to a black-haired girl with startling grey-green eyes. "How're you feeling?" She asks me gently. "Okay, I guess," I croak. "Hold on," she tells me and places a straw at my lips. I take a long sip. "Where-where am I?" I try again; my voice is stronger and smoother. A blond-haired guy joins the girl. "What's your name?" He asks me sharply with none of the gentleness if the girl. "Jack!!" The girl protests and pushes him in the arm. "What, Griff?" He looks at her, miffed, "Hey, at least I'm not Annabeth." "That, you're definately not; that's for sure." "I heard that!!" comes another voice from over in the room. "Good! You nearly shook me to pieces when I first woke up here!" The girl calls back. "Alright, but the main one was Percy! Telling you about Tyson!" The voice calls, another girl's voice. Then, another voice, a guy's, comes from that direction, too, "Hey!!" The guy protests. The voices in the backgund start bickering, drawing closer at the same time. "Done having our 'Yell-fest'?" The guy, Jack, asks with a laugh. They others draw close enough to me to where I can see them clearly. I guess that the blond girl is Annabeth and the dark-haired guy is Percy. Percy has the same sea-green eyes as the girl, 'Griff' Jack had called her, so I presume that they're related in some way. "What's your name?" Jack asks me again. This time, I can answer him, "Catalina, or Cat for short. Now, will someone PLEASE tell me where I am." "Okay, you're at Camp Half-Blood." Jack tells me bluntly. "Jack!!" Griff (I guess that her full name is Griffin) yells at him again. I study them for a moment. By the way that they act towards each other, playful like, I decide that they're probably boyfriend-girlfriend. Though, there's an air of awkwardness between them; they haven't been together long. Percy and Annabeth, on the other hand, act so naturally together, I guess that they've known each other, and have been through alot, for a long time.

My name is Aquafeather. I thought maybe you could give me a chance at being leader. If not I'm perfectly fine with it. I am a she-cat with silverish blueish pelt. I am a leader not a follower and I'm very loyal
