KLIATT - KLIATT Review
Knitting is based on a time-honored tradition practiced in many different cultures. The basic tools have always been the same: two sticks and some yarn or string. Folk STYLE is a collection of 22 knitted projects from small to large, easy to challenging, subdued to colorful, and textural to lacy. The projects reflect the ideas and talents of 16 designers from various countries and perspectives. Some of the projects are traditional while others bridge traditional and modern techniques. Each design, however, applies traditional techniques in a totally new way. Some of the projects are: All Buttoned Up (an adorable cardigan for a child), Modern Quilt Wrap (colorful block scarf), Bunad Mukluks, Appalachian Gathering Basket, Sunny Flower Fez, Shanghai Surplice (an Oriental-inspired pullover sweater), Felt Appliqued Skirt, Algonquin Socks, Indian Silk Pillow and Bogolanfini Pullover (Fair Isle and African-inspired mud resist pattern). Numerous gorgeous color photographs provide visual references for each project. Each project includes detailed instructions, finished size, yarn and needles required, notions and the required gauge. A listing for yarn sources has also been included. The trendy knitter is sure to find a wealth of ideas in this book that apply to other projects as well. Mags Kandsis has been a knitwear designer for over 18 years. She is also the author of several other books on knitting. Age Range: Ages 12 to adult. REVIEWER: Shirley Reis (Vol. 42, No. 1)

Bag Styleand Folk Styleare the latest entries in Interweave's series of themed pattern collections by well-known knitwear designers. Bag Style features 22 detailed patterns for knitted bags in a variety of styles and constructions that make for a constantly engaging knitting experience. Designs range from a simple iPod pocket necklace, to a purse based on a circular lace doily knitted from the center out, to a knitting bag featuring large wooden knitting needles as closures. There are also felted bags, colorful intarsia creations, Fair Isle, and cabled designs-all with numerous photographs and step-by-step instructions.

Folk Stylefocuses on garments and accessories with an ethnic flair, many featuring the bright colors, appliqués, embroidery, and intricate stitching that give a one-of-a-kind look to many folk textiles. Projects include a beautiful mohair wrap reminiscent of the traditional log cabin quilt block and a colorful knitted skirt embroidered with felt appliqués. Each book features a "Design Notebook" with suggestions for knitters wishing to expand their skills to knitwear design. Most of these patterns require at least intermediate knitting skills. Highly recommended for large public libraries.
