Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Kirkham Martin
In this recent title in the "My First I Can Read Books" series, Mittens joins Nick for a walk through the woods. The playful kitten is content to stick close by until a fluttering butterfly awakens her curiosity. Mittens follows the butterfly around a bush and over a pile of rocks. Not until the butterfly soars high into the sky does Mittens realize she is lost. Nick is nowhere to be seen. When she hears Nick call her name she follows the sound of his voice to find him and her way back home. This sweet easy-to-read story is illustrated in soft colors that work well with the simple text. The constant action and familiar story line are sure to engage young readers. Clear illustrations depict the details of the text, making this a highly predictable read. All of this combines with large font size, short repetitive lines, and limited vocabulary to result in a great choice for emergent readers.

In this second Mittens book, Nick invites his curious kitten to come for a walk with him. The feline is excited to follow along, until he sees a butterfly that he cannot resist chasing. When it flies out of reach, Mittens realizes that he is alone, and that Nick is nowhere in sight. This seems to frighten him at first, but he solves his problem by following the sound of Nick calling for him, ending the story with a joyful, purr-filled reunion. Charming watercolor illustrations expose Mittens's proud and confident personality, while the nimble, flowing text mimics the pair's romp through the sunny spring meadow. This pleasant story, filled with simple sentences and a repetitive style, will appeal to children.

Kirkus Reviews
Sweet kitten Mittens and his owner Nick, are back in this second book about Mittens in the I Can Read series. They are exploring the safe, interesting world outside their front door. While on their walk, Mittens stops to smell the flowers and is distracted by a butterfly and gets separated from Nick. Not to worry, a sweet reunion is in store. Short, manageable repeated text, generous font and clear illustrations are hallmarks of a good offering for brand-new readers, and this one delivers on all counts. The language sounds a bit stilted to an adult ear, but the predictable text and easy-to-decode words are just what an emerging reader needs. More challenging words ("flutter," "butterfly") allow a little challenge and are repeated frequently enough to become familiar. Clear, uncomplicated illustrations complement the text, further ensuring reading success. Comforting predictable fare for the newest reader. (Easy reader. 3-6)
