I must confess, I have never liked western novels. I have honestly tried to like them. When all of my friends have given me their hand-me-down books and I have promised to read them, I got maybe a chapter or so into them before putting it down, or more than usual, I would just fall asleep. After devouring the Donovan Creed books by John Locke and falling in love with his fast, funny, unpredictable style of writing, I thought I would give the genre one more try. I am so glad I did! This is not my grandpa's western. Emmett Love's character is so much fun, so unpredictable and the plot so original I found myself not wanting to put the book down. This is the old west as I never could have imagined. What a fun read! All I know is that I cannot wait for the next adventure of Emmett Love and Gentry and I am so glad that John Locke has invited us into his new western world, as well as my old favorite of Donovan Creed. Cheers to you Mr. Locke, well done once again!!

Good old fashioned Western adventure. Appealing hero, evocative descriptions of the western locations and towns. Well written; and with none of the grammatical or punctuation errors so common with free books. The story is about "soiled doves" and there is some cussing and earthy sex talk and descriptions, but it's in keeping with the story and I was not offended. Good short, quick read.

This is a western perhaps more true to the reality of the times than most of the pasteurized, romanticized vision of the west most often portrayed. Has just a hint of a supernatural thread that begs explanation that never really comes but the characters are engaging enough that it doesn't really matter that there is a minor story thread that never gets a tidy resolution. This was a different, earthy, fun read as long as you are not offended that prostitutes are central characters in what winds up being a love story of devotion and redemption.

This free book was a fun, crazy read. The editing was very good. I laughed, teared up and really enjoyed the crazy characters. This has an open conclusion, because there is a sequal, there may be a prior book also. This book is around 240 pages, give or take a few. I was unsure about reading it as I am not really into westerns. I am glad I did. It reminded me of the old TV show, Wagon Train or an episode of Bonanza. There is cursing, violence, cruelty, death, sex and some types of abuse. These events are detailed just enough to let the reader know what is going on, without being horrifing or gross. There is some romance. This not chick lit. I think men as well as women will enjoy this book. It is not a run of the mill book, it is just plain fun. For ages 18 and up. AD

I've paid a lot more for ebooks and enjoyed them less. This had a lot of surprises.

This is not your grandpa's western. Or your dad's for that matter. Mr. Locke has single handedly revived an entire genre.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was well written (except when you referred to a "her" as a steer) & to tell the truth I hated to see the story end. If the rest of Mr. Lockes books are as good as this one I can't wait to read the next one.

This is my first book by this author. I was pleasantly surprised. I love a good western and if it can have some humor, makes it even better. I really liked the Emmitt Love character and enjoyed the other participants in this story. I will be looking for other books by this author and will seek out the rest of this series
