Overview

Tinkling pianos, ringing, slashing guitars, skittering mandolin lines, pounding drums, breathy backup vocals, and a judicious use of strings define the sonic landscape of Sherrié Austin's triumphant third album, Followin' a Feelin'. In other words, the comely Australian lass -- who once played Pippa on NBC's hit sitcom The Facts of Life -- is keeping herself planted in country while blending bracing pop elements into the mix with excellent results. As cowriter of nine of the ten cuts here, Austin shows off the pragmatic wisdom that made 1999's Love in the Real World so captivating. The rocking "Brilliant Mistake" recounts how "a perfect blunder" turned into an unexpected but fulfilling romance. "Back Where I Belong" is a big, bold ballad advising perseverance in matters of the heart, despite past disasters. Ever the realist, Austin admits that sometimes it just doesn't work out, a philosophy she advances most sensuously in cooing the woozy, bluesy honky-tonk lament "Somethin' Missin' in the Kissin'." On the one song she didn't write -- a fierce cover of Dolly Parton's classic "Jolene" -- Austin's searing conviction makes for a memorable artistic moment and a powerful homage to a primary influence all at once.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Maria Konicki Dinoia
Australian songbird Sherrie Austin, someone who's previously graced the Top Ten and made it to the mainstream with her pop-sounding music and vocals, has made a complete turnaround with Followin' a Feelin'. Tradition abounds on this surprisingly impressive ten-track collection. Not since Olivia Newton-John has an Australian made such an impact on country music, and that's what Austin does with this album. There's something to be said for creative freedom when there are no music industry influences, no label approvals, and no radio limitations. Austin sounds liberated, confident, and energized. She's evolved into an exceptionally strong songwriter, having written or co-written nine of the album's ten virtually flawless tracks. The tenth is Dolly Parton's classic "Jolene," which Austin gives her own spin. Other cool notables include the sultry-sounding "Goin', Goin', Gone" and the very likable bluesy "Something Missin' in the Kissin.'"
