Chapter One

OFF AND RUNNING

In a house of imagery
I feel absorbed.
I can not reflect
What I haven't learned.
Inside of myself,
Always inside.
Open up to a
New experience,
Your inner mind.
Lately I have
Faltered.
I have given in
To suicide,
Not death but
Social interaction.
I have an answer
To my inner puzzle.
I don't feel weak
I don't show fear,
I have closed my eyes
To see again.
I have repressed
What it means
To be the center of
Uneasy attention.
I have died
To live again.
I have been reborn,
But not as you think.
I have found
Friendship,
I have found
The morning.

BRANCH HOG

Indecent exposure
To what I've
Loved so much.
I scratch
My acorn
To the point
Of giving up.
Our tree
Together
Is short of
Quality time.
You live out
Your branches
By wasting mine.

THE DISCOURAGED IN US

Don't show
Your well-balanced
Anger
When you
Can't find
Your own way.
There are few
Who truly can.
Don't be
Discouraged
From trying to do
Most everything
On your own.
Though we
Are fraught
With weakness,
Our frailties
Will bring us
Closer
To home.

THE COLLEGE YEARS

An ex-girlfriend
Once wrote me
In a farewell letter,
"Who says the
College years are
The best years
Of a young
Person's life?"
From that letter
I thought she was
Tired of living.
I believe
There is no other way
To learn
Than to go out there
And do it.

SO, FLAME ON!

I am the first
Person to admit,
Not much
Can be salvaged
From a burnt-out past.
You may still
Enjoy a sunrise,
Or snow on the
Frozen ground
At twilight.
If you still
Gain an ounce
Of pleasure
In an orange sky,
After the blow
Of a thunderstorm.
You may
Find yourself
Smiling again,
Even though
Your past is
Decimated
By flames.

PLEASE, ON A CROWDED BEACH TOWEL

Pass the suntan lotion
So I can block the sun.
Oh, I forgot to
Say please.
I ask you now
Remembering
My manners.
I haven't been nice
For a while.
Give me some room
Under the umbrella,
My skin is
Burnt to a crisp.
Oh, I forgot to
Say please.
I am sorry.
I ask you now
Remembering
My manners.
My earlier excuse
Can not be used again.
Your skin
Like a magnet,
My skin
Like a metal.
I can not resist
To touch you.
Oh, I forgot to ask
For your permission.
My mistake.
I am truly sorry.
I am ruled
By my elements.
I can not resist
When I have
Iron in my blood.
I ask you now
Remembering
My manners.

SEARCHING FOR A REASON

What order
Do I live in,
Where my time
Is not my own?
To hash out
A living,
To earn a dollar,
Doing what
I loathe to do.
What kind
Of charms
Can I impress
Upon your face?
The disillusion
In a youngster,
The jaded optimism
Of a father.
Is there ever
A balance
Between the
Loner and the
Socialite?
No frame of mind
Could I find,
To cross a frown
With a smile.
My constant search
For something beautiful
Has left me
Looking into
Your eyes.
I want to open
My heart and head,
To follow
Your example
Of living positive
From morning
To dusk.

A SPICE OF LIFE

I used to be
A spice of life
In a form of
Disbelief.
Any tune I carried,
Long ago,
I lost to gain
Respect.
A frugal attempt
Towards understanding
I made eloquent.
Long ago I
Waded through
The unhappiness
Of others around me.
To strike a nerve,
To gain new ground,
To head out again as
The captain of the
Unbelievers.
I used to hold
A candle with those
Who came before me.
I once became
A spice of life,
Not for those who
Didn't believe,
But for me.

LIFE IN THE PAST

I tried so hard for you
I wanted to love you too soon.
Both of our ego's crashed
Salt and pepper sand on glass.
Now it is over a long time ago
Bruised and hurt is my suspended ego.
I am sure you are doing fine
Your heart is stronger than mine.
I have run out of ideas
I give up on any more reasons.
It is about time I let you go
It is so hard for me you know.
I want you back in my arms
To tell me you never meant me harm.
To show me your love again
To let me know to start again.
We could be so together
Glued like a ball to a tether.
Inseparable as we once were
I live in the past can I be cured?

MILKBREAD

I accept
This counter-
Offer.
Forced
Into
Countenance
Rather in
Your
Immediate
Direction.
Foiled
Plans led
By caring.
A devout
Follower
Of love sick
Heartbreak.
Forced
Into
Abstinence,
Not by choice,
But by
Unreciprocated
Wishful
Lust.

TALES UNDER THE SUN AND THE MOON

We were born
Without a sun or a moon.
We were denied
All the tools
We would eventually use.
And of all the love
We infected
The worst was our
Right to choose.
We were given
The gift of flight
Before we were
Ready to move.
We were given
A choice of colors
And we chose
To be blue.
We abandoned our will
Not to gluttonize
What our fathers
Would not use.
And any man
Left standing
Still had the ability
To lose.
We came from
The fields of reason
Carrying the power
To be moved.
A weasels game we entered
Championing the strength
To be amused.
Caught off guard
By the opposite sex.
Wasting away
In every aspect.
Snaking through life
Holding no respect.
We seemed engaged
To bitter conflict.
We persevered
With nothing but intellect.
Moved only by
The spoils of conquest.
We had a recurring dream
Of no regrets.
We still had the courage
To mold our innocence.
Saying goodbye
To our inner derelict.
Some of us spoiling
The higher seats
Of office.
Wanting nothing more
Than a peaceful
Engagement.
Wrangling time
With desperate dissent.
We climbed too high,
We broke many rungs.
We stayed too long,
We stared at the sun.
We lost our souls,
We never healed.
We stayed true to our goals,
We were always alone.
We never expressed fear,
Except in the eyes of the moon.

THE DWINDLING MAN

You are
Seduction,
You are
Beauty.
Encompassed
Into one
Uniform
Entity.
All knowing,
Ever seeing.
You rule
Over man
Five to one.
Vast in numbers,
Amidst depletion.
There is
No one finer
To leave
This planet to,
Once we
Are gone.

IN THE STUDIO

What do you know
About my
Situation?
You claim
To have all
The answers
Except when
It comes to
Salvation.
Your hoarded
Material world
Does not fill
Your stomach with
Sustenance.
Your bones
Will lie in a grave
Next to the people
You disrespected.

MY SIGH

Through the eyes
Of the moon
As they gaze
Circles around you.
One minute alone
Is the same as
One hour of despair.
Outside of you.
My sigh, my sigh,
Come to bed
In the night, in the night,
Roll over,
I must be phobic.
Somehow
I've known
I'm almost instinct.
And the pad
I've locked
Keeps my secrets
So dark.
My mind
Almost spinning,
My heart,
A crevice,
Yours for the taking.
My sigh, my sigh,
Come to bed
In the night, in the night,
Roll over,
I must be tragic.
My son has sent me
Past the shadows,
The hour is coming
Doesn't matter.
My ears
Are longing
For the sound
Of a flower speaking.
Self control
I must endure.
My sigh, my sigh,
Come to bed
In the night, in the night,
Roll over,
I must be phobic.

OVERFLOW

Memories
Sometimes
Fade.
Replaced
By broken
Things.
Assembled
Out of the heap,
From a past
You
Consider
Lame.
Experiences
Come and go,
This is just
The normal
Flow.
Throw down
Your pile
And vent.
Pray for the
Overflow.

EVENING FADE AWAY

As shade turns
Into night,
You feel me
Holding you tight.
No more chores
To do this
Evening.
The cats turn
Away towards
The night,
Each one curling
Towards
Out of sight.
Gazing at
The shadows,
We make nice
Bed fellows.
One compliment
Out of the day,
Breaking for
The morning,
Never in the
Same way.
We halt
This procession,
Bordering
On passion.
Watching
The ceiling
Twirl around,
Cooling our
Passions.
Rising out
Of the sheets,
We may make it
Till noon if
We do not compete.
Staring at
The sidelines
Until it is time.
To grow,
To cheat.
We have
It our way
When the
Evening sleeps.

THE UNCLEAR

Once I wished
And the wish was good.
It never came true
Like I thought it would.
Carry your voice
On another plane,
See your life change again.
Now you jump back
To see if it worked.
Hold onto your crutch
Let out a burp.
Remind your love
Of romance once in a while.
Tear down the forgotten
Make up a smile.
Simplify no more,
Try not to settle anymore.
Work on into the night,
Go without sleep
For the fourth night.
Carry your love
Like it is a torch.
Refrain from demand
Or a cursing touch.
How do we get together?
Is it assumed,
Or is it remembered?
Come closer
Let me feel you,
It has been a while
So be gentle.
Now I have
Confessed
Come on through the door.
Tear out your speech
Make an impression.
Believe me when I want to say,
But saying is no good
At the end of the day.
Take me apart
And cuddle me within.
My heart has holes
So break out your pegs.
Hammer long
Into the night,
Let everyone hear
Your clangs and grunts.
It will not
Change anything
To cry.
Your mistakes are yours
Take them with honey.
Fly to the fields
Reap what you sow.
Catch a virus,
Become rich in a day.
Lessons for you
Lessons for me.
Pay heed to anyone
Who seems to have a need.
Once again I am all worked up.
No where to go,
No time for make-ups.
I leave you now
With a small part of me.
Go swift towards the flame
Be quick with your dreams.

A TALE OF TWO HEARTS

My heart
Flutters
When I eat
Foods
Laden
With fat.
Much the same
As when my
Eyes gaze
Upon your
Innocent
Charms.
Life
Is grand,
Except for
Heart attacks.
As long
As I have you,
My heart
Stays intact.

A NEW SOBRIETY

I whisper
The same
As I left you
The night before.
Quietly
I escape
Through
Your in-door.
I seek a place
Of notoriety
And fame.
Not the sameness
Of yesterday,
But a different
Notion.
All the pangs
With semi-scorn.
Leave me now
And follow
No more.

THE STONE OF SPAWNING

Your gift to me
Is to bring me down.
To make me touch
The stone that
Spawned me.
How can I relate
To something
I have no memory of?
This stone
Of spawning
You point to
Is allegedly mine.
I look away
From the rotten face.
I recoil at the sound
Of the lecherous tongue.
I am unworthy
Before my Maker.
Beside my stone
Of nothing
I am undone.

AN ASPIRING NATION

Did you aspire
To earn
Minimum wage?
Were you
Brought up
In your youth
As a winner,
Only to be put down
As a loser
In adulthood?
Common ancestry
Of falling apart
Has secured
A foothold on
Your dreaming mind.
It is time
To take back
The fight!
Turn on
Your new enemies
To loving each other
Regardless of
Who is right.

PRETZEL RELIC

Coming up and going back
Somebody said
It would last forever.
Where is the logic
In seeking the truth?
I lie awake
On the dirty surface
Of your coffee table.
I fester
Under your
Couch cushions.
I might even lie
Between old
Sales papers and
Unopened envelopes
Still un-responded to.
In the corner
Of the home
You die for,
Inside the heart
Of the other.
Maybe now we can
Rest for success.
No matter how many times
We still have to work
Like the rest.
In the papers from
A few weeks ago,
We find solace
In the crap we can not
Control.
We call to each other
Without words.
We cry at ourselves
To dream.
We think no words
Are useless.
I never know what
Your reaction means.
In this house
Where aching begins,
I find new strength
In pain.

MOONLIGHT IN A JAR

Now that we
Have captured
Moonlight in a jar,
Where do you
Want to go?
Down to
The lake,
Through the
Pine trees,
Make love
Under the stars?
Now that
I have seen you
Will you let me in?
Can you trust
The one who
Captured the moon
For you?
A walk
At midnight
Through
A forest of pine.
What could be better?
The wood
Alive with
Star-life,
The sky screams
With chatter.
I want you to know
No one else
Has made me happier.
That is all
I can say,
Stay by my side,
My thoughts belong
To my mind.

MY OWN ACCORD

I wait for motivation
Like it is a train
I need to catch.
Alone at the station
By choice, I know,
Of my own making.
Many things
Turn into thoughts.
A revolving circle
Somehow steering me
In the wrong direction.
It is all about the wait.
Being passive.
Letting opportunities
Slip away.
Like your first love,
You do not know
Where she is.
You do not know
Who she is loving.
I wait for a friend.
A simple need
Somehow never met.
Outlets pass me by,
It is not my turn
To plug in.
Somehow I always
End up alone.
It is of my own accord.
Pass me by,
Stare into my eyes.
I will not be afraid.
I must meet you,
I need to know
Who you are.
Who you are with.
If at all you are
Sharing.
Pass my gaze,
Think about your
Meaningless
Reservations.
Your meaningless
Feelings.
Your imagined
Expressions.
No ...
I contradict myself.
I want you.
If only to fill
The crevice,
If only to mask
My problems.
Fill up the mason jar.
Create another problem
To mask the original one.
"To mask the original one."
Repeat this phrase.
Once, twice, thrice.
I have said
This before now.
I am sad,
I am alone.
It is of my own accord.

BRINGING THE DAY TO BED

Today I developed habits
I will eventually break.
How many mistakes
Must I rethink
From today?
This night
Belongs to
The cynic.
I force my eyelids
Close to shut.
The only sounds
I hear are
My thoughts
On the run.
I established a goal,
I have undergone change.
I still find it hard
To fall asleep
At the end of the day.

LOVE GAME

You make a point
Not to harass me
Inside the realm
Of your face.
The glimpse I caught
Of you misbehaving
Left my smile
On the run.
I've seen the damage
Of self-hatred
Run its course
Through idle veins.
All of my wandering
Has left me waiting
For a smoothie
Blended by my headache.
I call out breathless
Your name under light.
Your game is remorse
Unattended by the night.

FOG BY MY ASTRAY

Brilliantly
I react to
Your longing.
I am led
By my astray.
We seek each other
In the moonlight.
Not without fog
Not without longing.
Emotionally attached
We have become.
I can see you
When you are not there.
I can see through you
When you are
Before me.
My eyes
Have adjusted
To the light,
Not without fog.
You are a common
Theme of
Immeasurable
Kindness, of
Numerous warmth.
Your hands
Wrap around
My indecisiveness.
My insecurities
Are undone.
How can I cradle
A love such as yours?
Your fire
Will keep me strong.

SURVIVAL TACTICS

When one man
Speaks to
A woman
His words
Are chosen
Usually
Carefully.
A woman,
Free from
Backlash
Of any kind,
Finds it a
Fitting end
To lay a
Sharp dagger
On the end
Of her tongue,
And slash
The man's
Attempt at
Courtship
Into jagged
Pieces broken
From the
Beginning.

TRIAL BY TWO

Where I lie down
I see you run.
The distance
Between us
Has grown by two.
A flint of hair,
A midnight kiss.
A floundering wish,
That was dismissed.
Now we separate
Diverge at the seams.
Where we once met
I now see.

CARRY ON

Today I will
Shoulder
This light
Stress pack
Without
Any trouble.
I do not
Bother
With frailties
To hinder
This fragile life
I have started.
On the go,
I move
Forward,
All the while
Never forgetting
The painful baggage
I was forced
To let go.
Having now
To make space
For newly
Stressed weight,
Which comes
From living
The life
I have
Always wanted.
