Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Allergies are a wide spread problem. According to the text, there are about two million American school-age children who have an allergy to at least one food product. This title is an attempt to give youngsters needed information about allergies from their sources, to symptoms and treatments, to reading food labels. The book is one in the "True Book Health and the Human Body" series. Other allergic reactions are caused by pets, pollen, molds, and dust. There are many difficult words printed in dark black ink that are used throughout the book, making it necessary for an adult to provide assistance. A glossary provides both meaning and pronunciation. Other listed resources for additional information include books and web sites. A combination of photographs and drawings add to the book's usefulness. The chart that illustrates the eight most common allergy-causing foods should prove very helpful. The high cost may make this out of reach for many budgets, but it does provide a good source for collections in need of information on this topic. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
