Gr 5-8-- This British import asks a great many questions about food production, but provides very few, if any, answers. The first chapter discusses the production advances of grain and animal farming during the last few decades. Chapter two describes the world's population growth and the negative effects of some of the farming methods used to keep up with it. The short food supply in the developing countries is the topic of the third chapter, while the fourth is concerned with the future. Some of the solutions proposed are much easier said than done. It is doubtful that the authors understand the complexities of the large-scale farming used in many parts of the U. S. The full-color photography is nothing out of the ordinary, and some pictures do not relate well to the text. The captions are not always adequate. Unfamiliar terms are defined in a glossary but not noted in the text. This title has some definite problems, but librarians may wish to give it some consideration because of its information on the use of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers.
