An eating disorder is a behavior intended to control weight that significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning. Eating disorders are serious health threats, and can be life-threatening. In some cases, they result in death. Most eating disorders develop in young people age twelve to eighteen. Someone with an eating disorder may severely cut back on food intake or eat large amounts of food. He or she may purge food from the body or exercise compulsively to stay trim, and may work out seven days a week. There are some basic behaviors to watch for. Food behaviors: If a teen regularly skips meals or eats only tiny amounts, or has a regular excuse for not eating or only eating low-calorie foods. Exercise behaviors: Some teens may begin to compulsively exercise, even to the point of exhaustion. Thoughts and emotions: If a teen believes that being thin will bring happiness, love or another emotional benefit. There are two basic eating disorders. Anorexia Nervosa is a medical condition in which the most obvious symptom is extremely low body weight. People with anorexia are obsessed with being thin. Anorexia most often occurs in teenage girls, but boys may also develop the disorder. Females usually focus on becoming as thin as possible. Males often starve themselves while trying to build muscle and look athletic. Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder that involves cycles of binging and purging. About eighty percent of teens with bulimia binge and then use some method to purge the food. The statistics of teens with eating disorders noted in this book is staggering. Part of the Marshall Cavendish series about "Food and Fitness," this book addresses the role food plays in our lives and in our health, nutritional and unhealthy choices we make as well as a range of eating disorders. The text is clear and easily readable, ranging from a 6th-grade to a 10th-grade reading level. Most junior high students would be able to read this with little difficulty. Factual information is supported by charts, graphs, sidebars and notes indicating sources and further resources. Supplementary materials include a glossary and a well-formulated index as well as a list of further sources for research purposes. As a nonfiction informational text, this would most likely not be a text that was read from cover to cover, but would more likely be used as a resource when researching a topic. Because of the high degree of organization and the textual supports, this would clearly be a useful text for this purpose. In the section on anorexia nervosa, the author has included information about harmful websites that promote anorexia as a lifestyle choice. This is an indication of the high level of research and inclusiveness of information in this text. Photographs interspersed throughout the book depict primarily adolescent girls, and a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds are represented. Reviewer: Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
