Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Melasi
Eating food provides energy for the body. Foods like yummy pizza play a big part in the science behind food. For example, pizza crust is bread which contains carbohydrates. Green peppers are vegetables and contain vitamins and minerals. Pepperoni is a meat which is protein; Cheese is fat and comes from milk. Together, those ingredients make up the food pyramid. The MyPlate food plate was created by doctors and scientists to help people make good food choices. The one in the book is very colorful and would be easy for a parent to use to teach a child about the different food groups. The author did a great job of using pictures and words in easy-to-read sentences to explain the science behind food, making this book a fun read. It will be an interesting book for children and parents to read together. A child will learn about things both familiar and unfamiliar to them including learning about simple and complex carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, minerals, vitamins, fats and dairy, while having fun looking at the pictures. There are even a few recipes in the back to try. It is a great way to learn along the way. The colorful pictures are large, and key words are bolded. Reviewer: Beverly Melasi
