Children's Literature
This book, which is part of the "Life Science" series, serves as a basic introduction to the food pyramid. The text is simple and reader friendly. There are photographs and illustrations on each page and there is a glossary in the back to help children with any new vocabulary that is italicized in the text. There is even a "Learn More" section in the back with a list of books and websites for further reading. The book lists the various food groups that comprise the pyramid and also teaches children the various roles different food plays in helping the human body grow and stay healthy. The author also encourages moderation by repeatedly mentioning the importance of having a well-balanced diet and cautioning readers not to eat anything in excess. The book is colorful and straightforward and would probably best serve parents who are starting to teach very young children about eating healthy. 2003, Compass Point Books, Ages 3 to 5.— Rihoko Ueno
