One of the "Mission: Nutrition" series designed for upper elementary students, this title discusses the way food can become contaminated, what happens when we ingest contaminated foods and how we can avoid food poisoning. Color photos, a few boxed suggestions for Healthy Habits, and highlighted vocabulary accompany the eight short chapters. The well-researched and up to date text is just enough information to alert young people to their food surroundings and introduce relevant vocabulary that they may not have heard before. It would have been helpful had the Four Safety Steps been listed as well as explained making them more visible and easier to remember. The last chapter, A Healthier You, introduces the Let's Move program initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama and suggests other ways to maintain your health. A glossary of introduced vocabulary, web sites for more info and an index are included. Hopefully, students will share the information with parents. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—Allying itself with First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" campaign, this series covers a wide spectrum of food-related issues. The titles go beyond good eating habits to look at topics not often covered for children, such as green eating, following special diets (although diabetes, still on the rise, is given a disappointingly brief mention), and proper nutrition for athletes. Especially noteworthy are Diverse Traditions, which depicts foods from around the world and encourages readers to try new things, and Healthy Balance, which addresses the mixed messages children receive about eating (e.g., clean your plate versus don't eat so much) and reminds them to listen closely to their bodies' messages to judge what they are really craving. Students looking for report material will not be disappointed.
