Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This easy reader, one of the series "Spyglass Books," offers a limited amount of simple information about foods that are grown are farms. Easy, large print text, usually just two to three sentences per page, is accompanied by two half page, color photographs per double page spread. The illustrations do not include captions, but generally match up well with the text. One photo, however, in the section called "A Sugar Farm," shows something (sugar cane?) growing in the foreground, but the photo is dominated by the large factory shown in the background, which may be confusing for many children. Another shows just the rear legs and teats of a cow attached to a milking machine. It may not be readily obvious to young children what this photograph illustrates. The book includes a table of contents, glossary of more difficult words that are highlighted with bold face type in the text, an index, and a list of information sources for further research. There is an Internet address for the publisher's web page that includes links to three other Internet sites, all of which are functional, mostly grade appropriate, and interesting. Very low reading level nonfiction remains somewhat scarce. In spite of its flaws, this book offers information in an attractive format that would make it a worthwhile purchase for many libraries serving lower grade elementary students. 2004, Compass Point Books, Ages 4 to 7.
