If Only . . . he hadn't broken her heart

Mackenzie and Landon were the perfect couple . . . until he dumped her and broke her heart. Fast-forward a year and they're back where they first met—Serenity Ranch and Spa, where they are once again working together for the summer. Talk about awkward.

Then, Landon takes a nasty fall and gets amnesia. Suddenly, he's stuck in the past—literally. His most recent memory is of last summer, when he and Mack were still together, so now he's calling her pet names and hanging all over her. It's the perfect chance for revenge. The plan is simple: keep Landon at arm's length, manipulate him so he's the one falling love, and then BAM, dump him. There's just one problem: Mack can't fall for Landon all over again.

The If Only romance line is all about wanting what you can't have, and Mandy Hubbard's hilarious break-up/love story is sure to captivate anyone who has ever wished for a second shot at love.

Editorial Reviews

Voya Reviews, April 2014 (Vol. 36, No. 1) - Debbie Wenk
Revenge for a heart so callously broken seems too good to pass up. Mack is back at her ranch job for the second summer. The previous year, she had fallen for a summer ranch hand and they had enjoyed a blissful few weeks. The first week back at school, however, she discovers him kissing his supposed ex-girlfriend. She is determined to forget Landon this summer, but he suffers amnesia from a fall off a horse and believes it is the previous summer, thinking the two are still a couple. Mack’s friend, Bailey, cooks up a payback scheme to break Landon’s heart. After very little hesitation, Mack agrees to the plan. She will make herself irresistible to Landon then dump him at the final, big event of the summer. Predictably, things do not go exactly as planned. This book is a disappointment. There is no character development and little depth to the story. Mack elicits little empathy with her vacillations between going along with the revenge plan and actually falling for Landon again—or rather, admitting she never got over him. Bailey gets the barest of sub-plots, and readers never get a chance to care about her one way or the other. Landon is mostly just described as incredibly hunky and good looking—readers never see why Mack fell for him in the first place except that he paid attention to her. There are certainly better romance novels out there, but this will probably find an audience among young teen chick-lit fans. Reviewer: Debbie Wenk; Ages 11 to 15.
Voya Reviews, April 2014 (Vol. 36, No. 1) - Madeline Miles
Fool Me Twice is a great romantic read for any girl. It is a heartrending adventure that really draws readers into the story. It is a comedic love story, and it is one of the best this reviewer has read. It is the perfect book to read after getting over a hard breakup because it is a feel-good, funny, enjoyable story. Recommend this to any teenage girl who has had boyfriend trouble, and even the ones who have not. Reviewer: Madeline Miles, Teen Reviewer; Ages 11 to 15.
Children's Literature - Caitlyn Payne
“How could I resist the idea of breaking the heart of the guy who crushed mine?” Mackenzie, known as “Mack,” thinks as she prepares for her second summer working at Serenity Ranch. Her plan? To manipulate her ex-boyfriend and co-worker Landon into falling for her a second time, then dumping him. Once at the ranch, Mack begins her stealth campaign to break Landon’s heart with the help of her best friend Bailey, but nothing goes as planned. Her attempts at pulling pranks on Landon backfire, and the retaliation turns into an all-out prank war. Even worse, Landon is still attractive and intriguing to Mack, almost more than he was the first time! Then Landon takes a nasty fall and gets amnesia—forgetting what year it is and believing he and Mack are still together. Mack begins to question herself. Is she really out for revenge, or is she taking the game too far? Can Mack make it through the summer without getting her heart broken? The author uses wonderful humor, empathy, and vivid, scenic and descriptive writing to convey Mack’s feelings and actions, making the reader feel like they are right there with the characters. The story does not always flow smoothly, as the background to Mack and Landon’s romance is told in small, jarring flashbacks. The author attempts to bring in a secondary romance between Bailey and another ranch hand; but the storyline is awkward, never fully develops, and is not integral to the main plot. Bailey is given an inordinate amount of attention. Her cynical attitude and comments provide a good foil to Mack’s enthusiasm, but they are too sharp for this lighthearted read. Nevertheless, Fool Me Twice is a fast, fun read that would attract a wide range of readers. The book is entertaining, hip, and sure to appeal to readers who like adventure and romance. Reviewer: Caitlyn Payne; Ages 10 to 16.
Kirkus Reviews
A light romantic romp from Hubbard begins in medias psychodrama. Mackenzie is returning for another summer at Serenity Ranch and Spa, working in the stables, where her red- and blue-striped hair won't be noticed by the ritzy spa's guests. Also returning is Landon, the boy Mack had a summer romance with last year—and who dumped her on the first day of school. Mack is struggling with her still-unresolved feelings when Landon takes a bad fall, hitting his head and getting amnesia. Landon now thinks it's last summer and that he and Mack are still dating. That gives Mack's best friend, Bailey, an idea: Mack should get Landon to fall in love with her, then dump him and break his heart. It's the perfect revenge, except for one problem. This time around, things are different between Mack and Landon. And since she never really got over him, it's even easier to fall for him again. But what will happen when Mack reveals the truth? The characters are fairly stock, with Mackenzie in particular feeling flat. That the girls can keep Landon's amnesia a secret from him requires a monumental suspension of disbelief. Still, this book, which launches the If Only series along with Kristin Rae's Wish You Were Italian, isn't really about realism. As romances go, it's harmless enough. (Romance. 14-18)

Gr 9 Up—It's another summer of lesson coordinators and tending to horses at the Serenity Ranch and Spa for Mackenzie, Bailey, and Landon before they head off to college in Washington State. The previous summer, Landon and Mackenzie were the perfect couple until he dumped her for another girl. Now Mackenzie has plans to hang out with Bailey, go shopping, and play the field. However, that changes when Landon bumps his head and loses his memory. He thinks that he is 17 again and he and Mackenzie are still dating. Bailey convinces Mackenzie to take advantage of his accident and get back at Landon for dumping her by pretending they are back together for the summer. After several pranks and lots of deception, the protagonist finds herself falling for Landon all over again, making this a great summer read for teens looking for a love story. Mackenzie is a sly, spunky character who is relatable and authentic. Readers who like horses will also find this enjoyable.—Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI

I get it. Teenage love can be rough and when you've been dumped

I get it. Teenage love can be rough and when you've been dumped by someone you really like, you tend to want revenge--especially if you just can't get over him. Meet Mack. She and Landon were a great couple, but after the summer ended, he pretty much never talked to her again...until they ended up working together once again the next summer.

Mack is a girl who marches to her own drum. She takes things to the extreme--dying her hair in patriotic colors and wearing worn baby blue cowboy boots with leggings. She comes across as very confident and secure with herself, yet she just can't get over Landon and seems to see what she wants to see when it comes to him.

When Landon takes a fall and has amnesia, Mack and her friend take the opportunity to get revenge--they plan on sabotaging him and making him fall for Mack so that she can break his heart. Unfortunately, thinks don't always go as planned...

I thought Landon was a jerk. could he just dump her out of the blue? His reasons were kind of lame. I was also appalled that he could be that seriously injured and the girls tried to hide it, focusing solely on revenge. They didn't even say a word to his mom! I'm all about second chances and things seemed to be different this time around. I liked the way it all wrapped up in the end.

Content: Moderately clean romance (almost skinny dipping, innuendo, making out, talk of hooking up, etc); moderate language; no violence; no religion.

In this book the characters are Mackenize and Landon. They were a great couple together until he dumped her and broke her heart. But a year later they were back together. But the story gets worse when Landon fell and got amnesia. But then he was stuck in the past. All he could remember is when he was with Mack. Things get worse when Mack wants revenge on Landon for dumping her in the past. This book is about how Mack tries to get Landon to fall for her and then her plan is to dump him. Who knows if Landon can ever get back to the present time he was in. Will he ever snap out of amnesia? Or will he be stuck with amnesia and trapped in the past forever.
