Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This book contains many of the highly successful singer's poems, written when she was a teen, complete with the stories behind them and her thoughts on relationships and friendships. Small black-and-white photos of Ashanti as a child are sprinkled throughout. The selections aren't very distinctive, but teen fans will still enjoy this title.-Jamie Watson, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Ashanti first sang in a gospel choir at age six. Her music career began to take off in 1994, when her performance at a local talent show caught the eyes of industry insiders. Ashanti's self-titled debut album was released in April 2002 and became the fastest-selling album by a female artist of all time, with 750,000 records sold in the first two weeks. The album stayed at #1 for ten weeks, and has since sold well over 2 million copies. Two songs from this album, "Foolish" and "Happy," reached the #1 and #2 spots on the U.S. singles chart. Since her debut, Ashanti has been nominated for five MTV Video Music Awards and five Lady of Soul Awards, and has received both the Teen Choice Breakout Artist of the Year Award and Soul Train's Aretha Franklin "Entertainer of the Year" Award for 2002. Ashanti's second album is due out in May 2003 from Def Jam's Murder Inc. label.

    Embarassing

I reviewed this book of 'poems' for my Poetry Writing class, and I wasn't the only one laughing as I presented some of the selections. I threw my copy away so I wouldn't be caught with it in my collection.

You're Outstanding Princess of R&B Miss Ashanti !!

I haven't read the book yet but from what everyone is saying it has to be off the hook! Ashanti is an inspiration to many young girls as myself. She is creating a way for teens to open up and relate to similar experiences.By that she is giving young girls confidence and high self esteem to move further to their dreams. Many are trying to compare her, she can't be compared. She is her own person. Ashanti is the Princess of R&B and except it.Give her mad props for all the things she's done and the things she has corrected in her life that made her prosper. Ashanti keep livin it up! and you don't need luck you're already GREAT!

    Well,

The words weren't deep, but they were still nice. I think most of what was written was probably done while she was still a teenager, so it was good for that. One particular part she is discussing what is the ideal date and she ends it w/ a night of sex. I think she should be more sensitive to who her audience is...young girls, not grown women.

I love you Ashanti, your my #1 fan!!!

To me, this book is so inspiring. I think Ashanti's book is very good work that comes with the talent of being such a wonderful singer and named the Princess of Hip-Hop and R&B. Ever since Ashanti has came out and been heard I have been her #1 fan and stuck by her. So no matter what Ashanti has to go through I will be by her and I hope to one day accomplish my dreams like she says and be just like her!!!!

    hated it

i give her 1 star because she can make words rhyme... but that does not initiate poetry... her work is weak like her voice... although it is heartfelt, where is the profound substance we search for in poetry and verse? 2 thumbs down.

The Princess is making it BIG!

Ashani came from a very long ways because I realize how long it took to get to the point where she is now. She's an amazing singer. I glad she entered into the buisness. With this book out people can get to know the princess a little bit better. For someone like her to come up as a new artist and be known as the Princess of Hip/hop & R&B means a lot to me. And Ashanti inspired me in so many ways. One thing Ashnti expresses and thats that Dreams do come true, all you have to do is just believe and for that I thank her much.
