Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This wonderful book focuses on a relatively underrepresented topic in sports medicine — the foot and ankle. There are numerous quality books on the knee and shoulder, but surprisingly few target the foot and ankle in sports medicine.
Purpose: As Dr. Altchek notes, "all sports medicine professionals know that the foot and ankle is the foundation to every athlete's performance." It is therefore the purpose of this book to offer a foundation in the care of athletes who suffer from foot and ankle injuries. I particularly enjoyed the dedication of Rock Positano, who credits Joe DiMaggio's heel spur with being the inspiration for the development of the specialty of foot and ankle sports medicine. I am not sure if it is true, yet it clearly emphasizes the impact that optimal treatment of foot and ankle injuries can have on athletic performance.
Audience: This book will be well received by a broad range of orthopedic surgeons, including foot and ankle specialists, sports medicine specialists, generalists, and orthopedic residents in training. It is well written and provides a solid foundation about the most common injuries of the foot and ankle seen in athletes. The editors and contributors have a decidedly east coast orientation; nonetheless, contributors from across the U.S. and around the world make it a great read for everyone.
Features: The book begins as most regional anatomic books do, by discussing anatomy and mechanics, before moving to a sequential, stepwise approach through specific diagnoses. The chapter on sports dermatology of the foot is particularly unique in an orthopedics book. In addition, the book comes with a complete online version that allows readers to access the material anywhere they have computer access. I did note that the authors present the use of synthetic plugs to fill osteochondral defects without pointing out that this is an off-label use. Nonetheless, overall this is a thorough and complete offering.
Assessment: This is an excellent go-to reference for foot and ankle injuries in sports medicine. It is thorough and complete, and will be valuable addition to my personal library and a commonly used book by my residents.
