Overview

The definitive pictorial guide to our most popular sport! Developed in association with the National Football League (NFL), Eyewitness Football features photographs and text on hundreds of people and objects from 80 storied years of the National Football League. Football captures the drama, excitement, and spectacle of professional football using the signature Eyewitness style. It is the definitive pictorial guide to America's most popular sport in all its rough-and-tumble glory, from its schoolyard roots through its rise to the status of an international supersport.

(This book) includes a wealth of information about the popular sport...with a design that is brimming over with text, pictures and caption additions, young readers will find much of interest on every page. (Winston-Salem Journal, October 3, 1999)

DK applies its unique visual approach to America's favorite supersport... (BookPage, December 1999)

Quick, easy-to-read snippets and captions provide NFL fans with a wealth of information about the sport... (Denver Rocky Mountain News, November 14, 1999)

Young adults and all football fans will love the massive amount of information and great color pictures that fill the book. This is not only a learning tool but also a delightfully full tour of Football from page one. (Rainbo Electronic Reviews, November 1999)

New football fans as well as longtime ones are likely to learn something from FOOTBALL. This slim volume is fact-packed and generously illustrated--mostly in color--with new and archival photos. Topics include the game's history, rules, equipment, fans, stadiums, and officials. Also closely scrutinized are the anatomy of the football, the evolution of the helmet, how television covers the game, and what happens on the sidelines and in the locker room. (Associated Press, Fall 1999)

It would be difficult to find a public library in the U.S. without at least one Eyewitness Book--many libraries own hundreds. The combination of on-target subject matter, with books on most of the subjects that interest both children and adults, and impeccable book design have made a dominant force that has changed the world of nonfiction publishing. (Booklist, October 15, 1999)

Provides an illustrated look at many varied aspects of the popular sport of professional football, including the history of the game, evolution of equipment, the playing field and modern stadiums, players, fans, and more.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Donna Freedman
This new entry in the "Eyewitness Book" series is a fascinating introduction to the sport as well as a good reference book for young fans. Packed with color photos of everything from pylons to blocking sleds to Super Bowl rings, the book features some intriguing historical photographs as well. And there's plenty of information, but it's packaged into small, reader-friendly blocks. Football is a good, sneaky way to get a sports-mad, book-reluctant kid to read. There is so much interesting stuff here that he'll wind up devouring the whole thing and maybe, just maybe, going to the library for more.
