Meet the Author

Ron Vanderlinden has been Penn State University's linebacker coach since 2001, where he is recognized for developing one of the top linebacker units in the nation. He coached the 2005 and 2006 Bednarik Award winners, the 2005 Butkus Award winner, two-time first-team All-American Paul Posluszny, and consensus All-American Dan Connor. Vanderlinden began his coaching career in 1978 as a graduate assistant for Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he had earned his master's of arts degree. He has enjoyed great success in his career as a Division I coach with stints at the University of Colorado, Northwestern University, the University of Maryland, and his current position at Penn State. Vanderlinden has been an integral part of four Big Ten championship teams, three Big Eight championship teams, and one National Championship team. He and his wife, Lisa, live in State College, Pennsylvania.

    Great Book- Best I've Ever Read

    Coach Vanderlinden's book should be required reading for all coaches who want to understand defensive football. The book is clear and concise with many diagrams and illustrations. The explanation of fundamentals is a superb section that is a must for all coaches. This is the BEST football coaching book I've ever read.

    Everything You Need To Know

    "Football's Eagle & Stack Defenses" was the best Defensive Strategy book I have read. If you are interested in running or just learning the Eagle and Stack Defenses, there is no book more worthy that this one.

    A Must Read

    The 'Eagle and Stack Defense' is the best defensive book I have ever read. The book is decise, well organized and current. Coach Vanderlinden does a great job of explaining techniques and adjustments to all formation and offensive schemes. At Southern we are a 50 defensive team and the book was easily adaptable to our package. In my 39 years of coaching I have never read a better defensive book. I strongly recommend it to any coach regardless of what side of the ball they coach.

    Must Read

    As a young coach and an avid reader I am always looking for new football books on the market. I picked up Coach Vanderlinden's book and couldn't put it down until I had absorbed everything in it. Coach Vanderlinden does an excellent job of teaching the intricate details and complexities of the Eagle & Stack Defenses in a simple language that any coach can understand. The detail included in this book is exceptional. It really is a must read for every coach from the high school level to the BCS. Offensive coaches would benefit from reading the book to gain a better understanding of the manner in which Eagle & Stack defenses choose to attack, and Defensive coaches will learn the not only the schematics, but the thought process behind using all of the calls in certain situations. Reading the book is like being able to sit in on a staff meeting at Penn State surrounded by coaches with 20+ years of experience at the highest level.     The secrets are in this book!

    Without question the best defensive book on the market. This book contains the elusive answers that are so difficult to find. Ron teaches his philosophy and principles of successful defense and does it in an easy to understand format. This is a great resource, and should be included in every coach's library. My entire staff has a copy and it has been an instrumental tool in implementing a new defensive system at Helix High School. The secrets are in this book!!!!     From an Offensive Point of view

    Coach Ron Vanderlinden has been a highly successful football coach for many years. His coaching of defense is second to none. Those of us who have studied from him understand why his defensive techniques and schemes are so effective. Now having the opportunity to learn even more from this book is an incredible advantage. As an offensive coach this book has opened my eyes to schemes and fundamentals of the eagle and stack defenses that truly caused problems for the offense. As a professional I have found several different uses for this book. As a defensive handbook for my youth programs as well as my middle schools and my defensive staff. As a guide to improve practice fundamentals, as shown in chapter 5. Also my most important use is as a key to better learn how coaches of the eagle and stack defenses game plan against my style of offense. There is no better tool in the shed than having the schemes and fundamentals that a defense lives and practices by on a daily basis. Coach Ron Vanderlinden has covered in such detail every aspect of the eagle and stack defense in this book. To read in detail what the cause and effect of every front and blitz, even the zone blitz package, can offer to your team is a defensive bonus for the reader. You cant coach what you can't fix and I truly beleive that this book is a map to help all coaches. I would think every football coach would want to have this in his personal library to draw from. Ron's chapter 17 on game planning is a must for every coach at any level, as well as his wonderful insight on the eagle and stack defense as a whole. In my 26 years in coaching I cant find a more useful defensive guide than Football's Eagle and Stack Defenses by Ron Vanderlinden.     A Defensive Coach's Dream

    'Football's Eagle & Stack Defenses' is a great resource for any defensive coach at any level of football. The philosophies, concepts and techniques of defensive football are explained in detail. Any questions that arise seem to be answered in the next paragraph. It flows well and is extremely well written. The graphics and diagrams are excellent and can be used in a variety of ways. Four members of my defensive coaching staff have read all or parts of this book and have found it to be a great teaching tool. Even if you don't use the exact defense that is described in the book, so many of the techniques and concepts described in the book can be implemented in almost any program in America. At the current time, this book sits on a table in my office where my staff and myself refer to it on a regular basis as an 'in-season' teaching tool. This has been a wonderful book for us as we strive to teach our student-athletes to do the right things and help them maximize their potential.     As Good As It Gets

    This book is a great reference tool for any high school or college football coach. The explanation of scheme is clear and concise. The level of detail is awesome and will allow any reader to truly and completely understand the material. The coaching points are invaluable 'I wore out 2 Hi-Liters and an ink pen marking up the text'. Whether you are just starting out and trying to learn defensive football, or are an experienced defensive coach, you are going to want this book in your library.

    Defensive Bible

    I have studied the Eagle and Stack fronts for 26 years and have never read a book that covers everything from fundamentals to schemes like Ron Vanderlinden's book! He explains how the two fronts mesh and how he has used both during his career as a head and assistant coach at the Division 1 level. This book not only shows how to align vs any offensive set but also explains the initial steps for all defensive personnel. Every coach at every level will become a better teacher by reading this book. I was amazed at the detail covered in each chapter. I have not read in 26 years a better book covering the defensive side of the ball. If you are a defensive coordinator this book should be the first resourse you pick up. In todays world of zone blitzes, Ron covers the ins and outs of the concepts that are essential in implementing them. Many give 'clinic talk' to sell books, this is truely the nuts and bolts of how to be great on defense. My favorite sections of the book are where he shows how the front and secondary 'fit' vs base run plays. Without the proper fundamentals of where each member fits success will not occur. This book is outstanding and should be the first book OR video that a defensive coach should purchase.     All football coaches and fans would enjoy reading Coach Vanderlinden¿s new book Football¿s Eagle & Stack Defenses. Whether as a head coach or assistant coach, Ron Vanderlinden has worked with some of the best football coaches in the profession. In the book, Coach Vanderlinden really shares his knowledge of defensive football. I was impressed with his attention to detail as he describes every nuance concerning the fronts, coverages, blitzes and adjustments. While reading, I gained valuable insight into each position¿s fundamentals that Ron explains in detail so well. The knowledge he shares in Part Five of the book, covering the fundamentals of each position would help any defensive coach, regardless of what scheme they may run. One of my favorite points Ron makes in the book that holds very true is that as a coach you should see the daily drills you do with your players show up on the game film. Perhaps the most insightful part of the book to me was Chapter 17, concerning how Coach Vanderlinden does the defensive game plan. I always find it interesting to see how each staff game plans a little differently. This book is basic enough for a first year coach to understand and comprehensive enough for a veteran coach to gain new concepts from.
