Overview

More than 125 years of kooky coaches, loony linemen, ridiculous runners, and daffy defenders give pro football a very special Hall of Howlers. Here are three wacky winners: * Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Roger Staubach, known as a model of seriousness, once was kept waiting too long by team owner Tex Schramm. Staubach crawled through an open window and crept along a three-foot ledge until he stood outside Schramm's window, eleven stories above the ground. Staubach's meeting started immediately. * Houston's 1974 offense was so bad that General Manager John Breen said the running backs tipped off their plays, because "whenever they broke from the huddle, three guys were laughing and one was white as a ghost." * Middle linebacker Dick Butkus defended his reputation for ferocity by saying, "I wouldn't ever set out to hurt somebody deliberately, unless it was important like a league game or something." And over 200 more!
