Overview

This book provides a detailed account of the varying theatrical activities on the Mexican-American stage in Texas and the culture of the Mexican-Americans involved. Ramírez reveals previously unknown data about the nature of Spanish-language theatre companies, their repertoire, their audiences, and the importance of what was essentially a «movement» of Mexican and Mexican-American troupes that toured from Mexico to Texas during the latter part of the nineteenth century through their demise in 1935. Ramírez focuses on the troupes' travels and residences in Texas through an analysis of significant representative companies.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
«Elizabeth Ramírez's book addresses an area in American Studies that is sorely in need of scholarly attention. As the subject of Hispanic American drama is one in which theatre practice and oral history are in constant interplay with literary as well as social currents, Elizabeth Ramírez's grasp of her subject in its many aspects makes her book an important one.» (Julian M. Olf, Chair, Department of Theater, University of Massachusetts-Amherst)
«This study treats a long-neglected strand of American theatre history: the Spanish-language companies and productions of the Southwestern United States. Based on exhaustive research, it describes every aspect of Mexican-American theatre in Texas as fully as surviving information permits.» (Oscar G. Brockett, Holder of the Z.T. Scott Family Chair in Drama, The University of Texas at Austin)
