Overview

He won the Pulitzer Prize for Battle Cry of Freedom, a best-selling account of the Civil War. Now James McPherson asks the pressing question: How could Americans fight one of the bloodiest wars in history against each other? The answer, the author argues, lies in the hearts and minds of the combatants on both sides. From officers to enlisted men, the soldiers were convinced of the ideals for which they were fighting: for the North, personal freedom and national unity; for the South, honor and tradition. Not until the Second World War were American warriors so moved by abstractions -- and they have never been so since. Combined with massive archival research, James McPherson's keen sense of prose style and talent for narration are rare and welcome finds in history-writing.

"James McPherson is the master historian of the Civil War in our time." (Gabor Boritt, Civil War Institute, Gettysburg)

In this book, McPherson helps one to understand the civil war from the perspective of those who fought and shows how the rational for it changed. This book is easily readable.
