For God and Country

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jason Birchmeier

Songs such as Sandi Patty's performances of "Star Spangled Banner," "God Bless America," and "Amazing Grace"; the Annointed's "Send Out a Prayer"; Amy Grant's "Helping Hand"; and Lee Greenwood's "We the People" embody much of what this album offers the listener: partly a sense of patriotism and pride, partly a sense of nostalgia and perspective. It's hard to imagine these songs carrying any more weight than they did in the final months of 2001 when many Americans began ...

It's hard to imagine these songs carrying any more weight than they did in the final months of 2001 when many Americans began re-evaluating their sense of patriotism and nationalism while many simultaneously sought out music such as this out of fear and insecurity. However, removed from that moment in time, these songs suddenly sound strangely secular and a bit overwrought, particularly when they're compiled together on one collection like this. In fact, by the end, if you can make it to the end, the power these songs embody becomes sadly diminished. Either way, you're probably not going to find a collection that features as many patriotic songs as this, even if Sandi Patty performs all three of the heavy-hitters.
