Overview

The HBO film For Love or Country tells the story of Arturo Sandoval, the legendary trumpet and piano virtuoso who defected from Cuba in 1990 in order to play jazz in the United States. The well-produced soundtrack features plenty of Sandoval's remarkable musicianship amid the highly rhythmic backdrop of percolating Latin jazz arrangements. Sandoval's high register, shockingly swift trumpet runs dominate the tracks that feature big band and small group jazz ensembles, as well as the more traditionally minded Cuban ensembles. There are also examples of Sandoval "accompanying" himself on some tender piano and trumpet duets. A Dizzy Gillespie protégé, Sandoval is as well-versed in bebop as he is in the music of his native country, and the occasional touch of electric funk here adds some welcome spice to the pot. This soundtrack proves how well he's thrived in his new homeland.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Steve Huey
The soundtrack to For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, the HBO original biopic starring Andy Garcia, presents a cross-section of the modern-day trumpet legend's career. Several historically crucial recordings from prior to Sandoval's 1990 defection are included -- spots with Irakere and Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra, the latter of which united Sandoval with a primary influence. While not the best overall introduction to Sandoval's music, For Love or Country is a highly listenable sampler and will doubtlessly whet the listener's appetite for more.
