Overview

Living on a deep space colony, C. Alan Scott yearns for fame and fortune. For his entire life, he has lived in his father’s shadow and desperately wants to establish his own name. Hoping that an interstellar expedition will bring him just that, he plans to explore uncharted regions of the galaxy. However, he has to take corporate bribes and conduct illegal acts to make it happen. When caught, Scott is forced to depart early in order to evade capture.
Once safely away from the colony, Scott’s challenges are just beginning. An idealistic science officer and blood-thirsty mercenary commander threaten to unravel his expedition, which discovers the first alien civilization and with it, the most valuable resource ever encountered. Consumed by greed and regardless of the risks, Scott stops at nothing to acquire it.
Surviving capture, failed negotiations, and a massacre at the aliens’ capital do nothing to deter Scott’s ambition. Even a pursuit expedition intended for his arrest does not phase him. Unwilling to give up, he continues to pursue his goal of fame and fortune but at what cost? Scott must decide what means he is willing to take to achieve the ends he desires.

Set in the future, it's characters exhibit the greed and lack of ethics so prevalent in our own modern day society. The main character, Alan Scott, is also the main antagonist who is driven and obsessed with fame and fortune. Highly unlikeable, selfish and self-absorbed, without a shred of integrity. You despair as you realize that this could very well be a prophecy of our interactions with less developed alien species when and if we ever manage to explore space and come across other intelligent life. Even Scott's foil in the guise of his science officer Lisa McHugh, soon finds her own ethics and reservations crumbling into dust as the carrot of untold wealth is dangled in front of her by Scott. While I truly hope that by the time we reach the stage of development of travelling to the stars, as a race we would finally grow up into a beneficient and benevolent species, the author's cautionary tale serves well to remind us that we have a long way to go to change our outcome.
