School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 3 A shed left to a group of school children is For Rent in this book; the skimpy plot centers on the children's renovations and experiences as summer landlords in their island community (which is much like Nantucket). The fact that there is no main character and no dramatic tension makes this story as flat as some of the writing (``They walked him to the shed. He liked it very much''). Children might enjoy the theme of independence and self-reliance, but this, by itself, isn't enough to sustain interest. The pleasant, full-color illustrations are typical of Martin's style (which will be familiar to New Yorker readers), but the sameness of expression in his cartoon characters' faces does little to liven up the story (even though his landscapes are quite pretty). Consider this for purchase only if local interest warrants it. Lauralyn Persson, Pawtucket Public Library, R.I.
