All Music Guide - Mark Deming
Singer/songwriter Tom Burris is also a published author who has taught creative writing, and it's not impossible to guess that after a listen to his first album, For Sale. Burris is not a bad singer imagine the love child of Dave Wakeling and Pat DiNizio, and his melodies are solid enough if a bit on the basic side, but it's obvious that the real selling point is meant to be his lyrics, and the guy certainly sounds literary as all get out. Burris has a genuine knack for capturing characters and incidents with words, and the best songs here play a bit like short stories, particularly "The Fisherman," "The Voice of Gideon," and "Sailor Song." Burris has a genuine knack for capturing characters and incidents with words, and the best songs here play a bit like short stories, particularly "The Fisherman," "The Voice of Gideon," and "Sailor Song." However, while Burris can certainly write a solid character, he doesn't always sound quite so comfortable bringing them to life, and while careful scrutiny reveals the diversity of Burris' themes and approaches, the album sounds awful samey as a casual listen. And while producer John Alagia has created some fine backdrops for Burris' songs, the singer often sounds a bit low in the mix, which hardly helps matters when the whole show is riding on the lyrics. For Sale certainly shows that Tom Burris has talent, but the album also suggests he has the potential to make a stronger album under different circumstances, and one can only hope that will happen.

    Men at Work

Catchy songs and a literate style is really no substitute for originality. Doesn't anybody hear the sound of "Colin Hay," from Men at Work in his voice? Goodbye 80s.

    For Sale

I picked up this CD after my friend turned me on to Producer John Alagia's other work --John Mayer and Dave Matthews -- and it's just as wonderful! Great production work, great songwriting and great lyrics. Tom Burris you rock!

    For Sale

I think this album is a lyrical masterpiece. Tom's lyrics are not only descriptive and imaginative, but they are equally provocative. He addresses social and political issues -- especially in songs like For Sale and Gideon -- which I believe many singer/songwriters today avoid. Thank you Tom Burris for a wonderful record!

    Simply great music

i saw tom burris with his band live a year or so ago here in New York and i've seen a *lot* of music (i was a soundman at a club here for 6 years) and his show was among thebest club shows i've ever seen. Amazing music, amazing energy, amazing songs. I have one of his self-released albums and i put this guy high on my list of most respected songwriters. I'm buying this CD now so i can't review it right now, but i read this other review on this site and i just had to put in my 2 cents. There's a huge amount of subtlety and emotion in tom's voice and the guy not only tells stories but tells good and relevent ones.... anyway... he's good

    Sweet, sweet stuff

I would have to disagree with Mark Demig's review above. I think Tom's style is so beautifully distinctive and his knack for bringing characters to life so deeply passionate, that one can only sit back and appreciate the time and effort that has gone into this album's blessed creation. We have seen Tom and his former band Jabbering Trout play at a bunch of festivals and I must tell you, his show is explosive. Bless this boy for his beautiful melodies and stories. This is one artist I think people will remember for years to come.
