Overview

In For the Boys, pin-up expert and writer, Max Allan Collins, pursues his interests in this special genre that germinated as he co-authored Elgren: His Life & Art. This volume chronicles the story and influence of the pin-up girl in WWII. Hollywood movie goddesses such as Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth, the fabulous dream girls of calendar artists like George Petty and Alberto Vargas, and the cartoon cuties of Al Capp and Milton Caniff inspired U.S. fighting men and provided them with sweetly seductive reminders of home.

A lavishly illustrated scrapbook of World War II pin-up memorabilia, For the Boys showcases the moral-boosting pin-up calendars, postcards, cartoons, matchbooks, and playing cards that sweethearts, wives,  and relatives sent from the home front to their men in the armed forces. In addition, the nose cosnes and bomber jackets fashioned by talented GI artists—as well as many if the original source images by Art Frahm, Earl MacPherson, Gil Elvgren, and other pin-up greats—are signposts on this sexy sentimental journey.

Editorial Reviews

Internet Book Watch
For The Boys isn't your usual general pin-up girl book, but a narrowed focus on the girls of World War II, detailing the story of the Hollywood pin-up model of the times and telling of how the movie stars showed up on calendars, postcards, playing cards and in cartoons. Full-page color illustrations pack a presentation which does a fine job of relating the pin-up girl to World War II history.
From The Critics
For The Boys blends an art history book with a focus on film and military images, considering the story and influence of the pin-up girl during World War II. For The Boys profiles calendars, postcards, mathbooks and other memorabilia featuring the girls and uses many original source images by Vargas, Elvgren and others to accompany photo-packed pages and information. A colorful, revealing collection.

    Pin-up Buffs

Absolutely a wonderful book for a coffee table. Having a bunch of friends that are also lovers of pin up girls, they love coming over to my house and looking through the book. The book tells the planes that carried the girls. My Father was in WWII and my brother in law was in Vietnam, so this gives me clues into what they may have seen.
