Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Stephanie R. Pearmain
This book starts off with two pages about the history of gymnastics, from gymnastics in the time of Ancient Greece to the creation of modern gymnastics in 1811. The next chapter is about how to get started in the sport, outlining the three styles: artistic, rhythmic, and trampoline. The necessary equipment is described and illustrated. Two pages are dedicated to the gymnasium, detailing the balance beam, mat, bars, rings, pommel horse, and vault. The book provides diagrams with descriptions and measurements of each piece of equipment. These are all clear and well explained. Next the basic moves of gymnastics as well as types of events and competitions are described. Four of the early gymnastic superstars are highlighted—two men/boys and two women/girls. It is nice that these are balanced out to reflect the participation of both sexes in the sport. As with all of the books in the "For the Love of Sports" series, there are two pages dedicated to healthy eating and stretching/exercise and a fun fact page and glossary. This is a great book for introducing young readers to the sport of gymnastics. Reviewer: Stephanie R. Pearmain
