No finer compliment need be paid to the craft of this pair of writers than to say that the narration puts you into a living, breathing, drinking and cursing 1593 – as it exists on the lines that ripple with wit and elegance – rather than merely describing a story that happened 400+ years ago.
Expanding on Christopher Marlowe’s singular history and adding a touch of the fantastical, the story crackles and burns like the Phoenix itself. (You’ll need to read the story to see what I mean)
Marlowe, famed playwright, is more than he seems – but finds himself wrestling to finish his latest play, a dramatic return to Carthage. Sinister forces are afoot, however, and whilst a newfound love suddenly flames his passion and his writing craft back to glory, so London finds itself in the grip of plague-ridden madness and evil deeds.
In a race against total destruction, the loss of sanity, and the machinations of the Privy Council – Marlowe must finish the play, save the city and work out who or what his new love is really planning.
This pair of writers – born on the same day, no less: which leads me to a cunning belief that they themselves are not all they seem… – have wrought an echoing tale of passion and power that wrings every ounce of Elizabethan intrigue, occult fantasy and vivid charm from the events surrounding Marlowe’s life and untimely death.
