More About This Book

Overview

For Widows Only! is an extraordinary book for widows. Personal, intimate, and honest, it contains straight from the hip girl talk, strictly for widows only! In addition to nuts and bolts advice, author Annie Estlund includes her most intimate feelings and those of many other widows, making this book relevant to widows of all ages at all stages.

Organized into three sections, "What Happened?" "What Now?" and "What Next?" For Widows Only! guides the grieving widow through her most anxious moments and helps her find answers to her most pressing questions. Ms. Estlund particularly empathizes with widows who think they will never survive their trauma or that life will never again be worthwhile. For Widows Only! offers guidelines to deal with the fears and aches of widowhood while maintaining an upbeat tone and hope for the future. Although life will never be the same, Ms. Estlund illustrates that it can be good again.

Wives and others who grieve will take solace in this candid view of widowhood, and widows will especially appreciate its honesty. For Widows Only! is destined to be every widow's best friend, always there when she needs it.

    Wisdom that Works

Bruce Estlund was charismatic and witty. His career as a Big Band singer was halted by the Korean War. I hired him as a reporter for the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune but his talent soon took him to an executive post with Wisconsin Telephone. Imagine the trauma when, not long after early retirement, his wife, Annie, awoke to find him dying of a heart attack. She and their children mourned his death. Annie, the gritty daughter of a small city mayor, knew she had to do more. An accomplished writer, she pours out her personal grief in this fine book, 'For Widows Only,' while achieving much more. She counsels widows of all ages how to grieve, how to heal, and how to rebuild a meaningful life. As a lifelong personal friend, I commend to widows (and their families) this excellent compendium of wisdom from someone who really has 'been there.' Oliver D. Williams, Middleton, Wisconsin

    My Lifesaver

This book has been like a life preserver to me. Reading about other widows' concerns has given me more strength to face my own. I think anyone who has suffered a close loss would find help here. It is sensitive, intelligent and well researched. Parts even made me laugh sometimes, when I thought I never would.

Finally, a solid piece of work that both comforts and supports the grieving widow.

For Widows Only! is a surprisingly readable and comforting book. Annie Estlund identifies many stages of grief that she experienced and that will resonate with many other widows. Annie speaks directly to her readers, 'widows of all ages, at all stages' and who will, I suspect, recognize themselves and feel her warmth and respect her solid thinking. We have long needed a warm, yet matter-of-fact book like this... and I also suspect it will find it's way onto every women's book shelves, including the many professionals who have been waiting for it. Annie Estlund also offers a wonderful web site where she answers questions and provides a forum for widows to meet and support one another. http://groups.msn.com/ForWidowsOnly I am happy to recommend For Widows Only! to all women, grieving or not, as a staple in their library of support. Professionals will find it of great help in their practice.

    If I had only known

I wish I had had this book when I first became a widow 31 years ago; it would have eased my anguish; the emotional pains that I endured would have been easier to understand.
