Overview

A groundbreaking book by the co-directors of one of the country's first women's sexual health clinics-destined to be an essential resource for women throughout the country.

According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, 43 percent of American women suffer from some kind of sexual dysfunction. And though the introduction of Viagra has increased attention to male sexual concerns, the problems women face are often ignored. For Women Only is the first book to offer a comprehensive exploration of female sexual dysfunction.

The co-directors of the Women's Sexual Health Clinic at Boston University Medical Center — Jennifer Berman, a urologist, and her sister, Laura Berman, a sex therapist-draw on research and clinical findings to show that many of the physical problems that cause impotence in men can cause sexual dysfunction in women. In addition, many women experience diminished sexual response as they age, go through menopause, and after hysterectomies or other pelvic surgery.

Covering both physiological and psychological issues in a straightforward, sympathetic style, the Bermans provide authoritative, easy-to-understand information on the medical breakthroughs and treatments that can help women of all ages enjoy more fulfilling sex lives.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Although sex and sexual dysfunction are no longer taboo subjects, many women still feel uncomfortable discussing their sexuality, especially when there is dissatisfaction or a problem involved. For Women Only is a forthright, informative book that aims to make women more aware of and comfortable with the female anatomy and sexual response. Drs. Jennifer and Laura Berman -- exploring both the physical and emotional roots of female sexual dysfunction -- provide valuable information for identifying and dealing with an array of sexual problems that women of all ages may experience. They also offer candid advice about communicating with partners as well as doctors, and discovering a more satisfying sex life. Despite its title, For Women Only is a admirable and much-recommended read for women, men, and physicians.
Library Journal
Men's sexual problems were thought to be mostly psychological until recent research found origins in medical/physical conditions and drug side effects. Without minimizing psychosocial issues, sisters Jennifer and Laura Berman--a urologist and a sex therapist, respectively, and heads of the Women's Sexual Health Clinic of the Boston University Medical Center--show that the same is true of women's sexual dysfunctions. They describe types of sexual problems, give examples, and trace causes to hormone shifts, disruption to pelvic nerves, disruptions in pelvic blood flow, drug side effects, infections/inflammations, and pelvic floor prolapse--plus the usual psychosocial factors like lack of sex education, partner miscommunication, and depression. Importantly, they do not forecast 100 percent sexual ecstasy with treatment. A valuable section tells how to talk to physicians about sex and not take embarrassed "no's" for an answer. More of a "how to get help" book than a "how-to" book, this cutting-edge report belongs in all public and academic libraries.--Martha Cornog, Philadelphia Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

    Okay, no realistic solutions

The book is a good guide to understanding your body as a woman. It does alleviate your mind, that you are not the only one going through this. However, if you are looking for a realistic solution, this might not help. They offer possible supplements you should take, but they still insist in visiting a doctor to determine for sure the cause. If the doctors where I lived would even acknowledge this problem I could, but they don't and that's why I bought the book. I guess you would have to go visit these doctors in the book, or great if you happen to live there already. I am not rockefeller, I have to go to whatever doctor my insurance tells me to go to.

Excellent information for women--and their partners

What Our Bodies Ourselves was for women's health, FOR WOMEN ONLY is for women's sexual health. Terrific information about the physiological and emotional reasons that your sex life may not be as good as it can be, and very helpful advice on how to fix it. The Bermans' important message is that you don't have to live with a so-so sex life--most problems can be fixed.
