Yet another in Decca's series of mood music samplers, For Yoga is a collection of serene pieces superficially packaged to attract people who might like slow classical music with their morning stretches. How Decca can presume to know what works for meditation, physical well-being, and inner balance is a question yoga practitioners may well ask. Others can take or leave this compilation, since it is interchangeable with many other "chill-out" discs offered by the major labels. The performances are all decent, from such renowned ensembles as the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, to name a few, and a handful of notable soloists, such as guitarist Eduardo Fernandez, violinist Christer Thorvaldsson, and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. However, the program is predictable and unimaginative, and the selections will be familiar even to the most casual listener. The dominant tempo of the disc is adagio, though there are a few moderately brisk pieces that break the flow. Boccherini's "Menuetto," Gluck's "Dance of the Blessed Spirits," and Dvorák's "Tempo di valse" from the "Serenade for Strings" are too lively for the album's broad pacing and work against its intended purpose. The sound is clear and evenly adjusted between tracks, so no sudden volume adjustments are needed.
