Overview

49% of Americans believe their government officials are honest. I don't know these officials, or their supporters, but I know their secrets, and 49% of Americans are wrong.

My employers pay me well to be right, to know things others can't. But I don't know why they brought that boy in, strapped to a stretcher, barely conscious. He asked me for help when I could give none.

I'm a wealthy spy, a talented artist, a martial arts black belt, and a prisoner. They tell me that on my eighteenth birthday, I will be released, free to go to the college of my dreams. It's my eighteenth birthday, and a man in black is at my door. I know he's not here to free me.

I know, because I can read minds.

My name is Sam, and this is my story.

So begins the tale of Sam and Drake--from the time they link minds, forging a bond that leads to an unconventional romance--to their fight for survival against the corrupt, twisted organization known as 'Rent-A-Kid.'

"...a thrilling, dark and deeply romantic read that had me sitting on the edge of my seat and eagerly awaiting the next installment." ~ Refracted Light Young Adult Book Reviews

"The plot is very ALIAS and DARK ANGEL-like with X-MEN as its backdrop (awesome combo!). Forbidden Mind BLEW my mind!" ~Sour Skittles Book Blog

Forbidden Mind Book One Sam is getting ready for her eighteenth birthday, when she can finally leave “rent-a-kid” where she and other kids with paranormal powers are used as spies to the highest bidder. After one of her missions she is taken back to the institute where she sees a guy who links to her mentally asking for help before he passes out. From that moment the two shares a connection that cannot be broken, but Drake has shown Sam a side of the institute she never wanted to believe and they must both fight for their lives to escape. Kimberly Kinrade has a great story going with Drake and Sam even the other students with paranormal powers, but to make it even better about halfway through she throws in a juicy twist making this an amazing read. I didn’t really feel the connection right away between Drake and Sam as the author had intended, I mean for me how can you fall in love with someone with only having seen them once at a glance? But as the story progresses you manage to fall in love right along with them. Putting the twist into this book was a stroke of genius adding a whole new level of depravity to an already atrocious situation. I cannot wait to keep reading, I just hope the author will not lose momentum and will continue to surprise us. I was sent a free copy of this book for an honest review.

The book starts out at school with Sam. She is painting and dreaming about the future, going to college and having fun with her friends. Things take a turn when Sam gets told she has to take a job and risk missing the most important event in her life. The thing about her school is they are also a Rent-A-Kid. They are kids with special Para Powers that get rented out to the rich and powerful to work. Sam Starts to find herself and not letting others push her around anymore. Drake gets introduced while he is surfing. He feels at home in the water but today he senses someone watching him and nor for a good reason. He gets back to his apartment and his roommate tries to get him to lay low but Drake doesn't listen listen. Then while heading to visit Father Patrick he springs into action and uses his powers to save a life. Father Patrick protects him and warns him to be careful. Drake decides to continue living his life and heads to a surfing competition. That is when things go south. Go read this book! I loved it. I started the book over and could not put it down. The story is so well written. They make sure that you can follow along as it jumps from Sam to Drake's point of view. This book is the first in a trilogy and is a must for lovers of paranormal, romance and mystery.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 unicorns - I loved it!! I loved this book :)  Fantastic start to a new series, I was sucked straight into the story.  There was no awkwardness that sometimes happens in the first book in a series while building the world.  It was an easy read.  Yes it was an absolute emotional rollercoaster.  There were times I wanted to slap Sam and her friends for being so naïve (but it was the only thing they’ve ever known), but I also cried with them, raged, felt sorry for their childhoods being stolen from them, and so much more.  Sam and Drake has this connection like soul mates, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.   Kimberly did a fantastic job, if the rest of the trilogy is like this she will be on my list of favorite authors.  Must read for any paranormal, X-men, fantasy, and sci-fi fans :) Can’t wait to read the next one!! **Book gifted to me as part of a blog tour for honest review

Throughout this novel Kinrade shows the best and worst of humanity. Through her amazing story and flawless writing Kinrade highlights this in a manner that defies conventional storytelling. As always, Kinrade draws you in and keeps a hold throughout. I couldn’t put this novel down, even for a second. This novel is eloquently written while remaining entertaining. I really appreciate that Kinrade takes the time to turn out a well written, well edited novel. This compliments the very solidly built storyline to create an experience well worth her readers’ time and effort. I like how she smoothly switches from the 1st to the 3rd person as she switches perspective between the two main characters. It adds extra intensity and clarity to the story. It is also so well done that it never breaks the flow of the story. I love how Kinrade develops her characters. Each is developed individually, but in a manner that suits the story and their role in it. She never throws out random details just for the sake of it. Everything adds to the characters as we know them, and helps to build the story. This novel has suspense galore. But it is also full of emotion. I found myself really getting into the story and rooting for the hero and heroine. It was such a rush. I’m still reeling. But wow, what a way to start a relationship…. Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review

Great trilogy. Action packed. Even had to take breaks at times. Climax of book 3 a bit extreme, but still good

Loved this story. It captivated me from the beginning to the end. Sam and Drake the main characters are very real and likeable. You will also love other characters in this book like Luke and Lucy. Since I was so captivated by this story so much I am moving on to book two of this series Forbidden Fire right now.

Overall this a good book. Most everything was very well done but for an aspect that made me put it down. One would expect safeguards at the facility preventing certain uses of parapowers. Some situations that were clearly serious fizzled as the character focused on mundane issues despite discovering life changing insidious conduct against them! So for young adult readers these issues might get overlooked but I think for serious, average intelligence readers they will become stumbling blocks. Dale M. Baranoski

Ok so first of all I have to say I LOVED IT! What a fantastic start to what I hope will be an amazing trilogy. This book kept me up late at night reading and I had it read in a couple of days which is really fast for me. Sam is not your typical teenage girl. She is a seventeen year old that can read minds. She has lived within an organization that she calls "Rent a Kid". All the kids here have some kind of paranormal power. Since she was about twelve she has been sent on jobs to spy and gather information for the rich clients that have hired her. When she finishes this "job" she thinks that it will be her last. You see when you turn eighteen you get to leave "Rent a Kid" and go live your life where and how you want. Or so they have been told. When Sam returns from her latest "job" she sees a teenage boy, Drake, strapped down to a bed. He speaks to her mind telepathically. He asks for her help. Drake did not grow up at "Rent a Kid" but he does have a paranormal power, he can control people and things with his mind. Sam was not supposed to see or know about Drake. They form a two way mind connection and stay in touch this way. They also fall in love even though they have never really met in person yet. Drake has been and is continuing to be drugged so that he cannot use his mind control power. Sam starts to wonder if he did something wrong and that is why he is being drugged and not able to use his power. But when she talks to her best friends, twins Lucy and Luke she gets another idea. Is something more sinister going on at "Rent a Kid"? When Sam turns eighteen things start spiraling out of control. I was loving the story from the beginning but when Sam turns eighteen things start to get really interesting. There are so many twists and I honestly did not know what was going to happen next. It is not predictable at all. I am not going to give any spoilers away but let me tell you this is a must read. I highly recommend it, you will not be disappointed! This e-book was provided to me for review. This did not affect my review in any way.
