Meet the Author

Laird Hamilton is known as the guiding genius of crossover board sports, and he is truly amazing in the water. His size—6'3", over 215 pounds—makes him seem indestructible. Laird is the elder son of sixties' surfing legend Bill Hamilton and is a throwback to that time when surfers prided themselves on being all-around watermen. His mother, JoAnn, gave birth to him in a "bathysphere" with reduced gravity as part of an experiment at the UC Medical Center in San Francisco. JoAnn was also a surfer and decided to move the family from California to Hawaii when Laird was just a few months old. They lived on Oahu's North Shore and later in a remote valley on Kauai, not far from one of the world's best surf breaks. He learned to surf between the ages of 2 and 3 on the front half of a surfboard; and at age 8, hi father took him to the 6-foot cliff at Waimea Falls, where Laird looked down, looked back at his dad, and jumped. "He's been bold since day one," says Bill, "and hell-bent on living life to the extreme." He lives in Hawaii and California with his wife and three daughters.

    Coffee Table Book

    The information in this book is presented on a very superficial level - Laird doesn't get into any of the subjects particularly deeply. The chapters read more like magazine articles. It is a coffee table book, really. I would have liked to hear more.

    Laird is the Man-By Austin O'Leary

    This book Force of Nature is absolutely amazing. Although I am not a surfer Laird's book inspired me to work out eat the right foods and mentally want to attack my day with a positive attitude. He goes through challenges such as his literally 200 different scars ranging from literally head to toe and torn ligaments. This book is one that I would recommended to anyone who is looking for an inspiration to workout and get stronger. From reading this book I have learned that Lairds book show how intense he is towards doing his best and to achieve the goals that he has made. The book reveals that Laird Hamilton is a total athlete. You can read about him; you can follow his recommendations; you can be inspired by him; but it's clear you can never match him. Now I know why he is the best surfer in the world.

    A must-own for surfing or health/fitness enthusiasts

    Laird Hamilton made his mark as one of the world's greatest surfers ever years ago. But he's also an inventor, environmental activist, devoted father, and fitness icon. Rather than simply an autobiography, "Force of Nature" is a compilation of his thoughts on living life to its fullest. Yes, surfing is a big part of that as it's his passion and profession; but Hamilton goes above and beyond the call of duty for the book when he shares his views on fitness, the human body, sport, and the winning mental outlook and philosophies behind them all. Told in the first and third person narratives from Laird and his friends in the fields of surfing, medicine, yoga, family, food, coffee and more, the book is really an account of training your body and mind to perform to it's utmost potential in whatever it does; be it in the ocean, around the house, on vacation, or on the job. Packed with lots of color and black/white photos, and great tips on diet and workouts, it is truly inspiring to see and read this entrepreneur's take on achieving self-betterment and how it manifests into every corner of his life - and still brings him peace and happiness, not stress!

    not so good

    It's a ok read if you are a total fan and want to learn a bit more about Lairds diet and see some nice images of him. Other than that it is pretty lame. It seems to be written in a couple of weeks. Not sure what the purpose of this book his.

    Fascinating look at the life and mind of a surfing guru!!

    Laird Hamilton is an innovator in the surf world and has completely devoted his life to the ocean. This book is a great way to live vicariously through him for a moment. It has amazing pictures and allows access to his diet and training philosophy. It is a great book for fans of Laird and for fans of surfing in general! On the downside, Laird does give some eating and exercising tips and for an average Midwesterner it is actually quite humorous to consider his training plan!! He suggests avoiding the gym as much as possible, instead get out on the water, train in the sand, or perhaps drop in on a mountain from a helicopter and ski! He praises whole foods and then talks about eating huge amounts of cow and getting his veggies from powders and potions! I would not suggest his book for people looking for fitness or nutrition advice, but for fans of Laird and surfing it can be a fun read!!
