Forces and Motion

Forces and Motion

by Alvin Silverstein

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura Ruttig
Although easily defined as a push or a pull, the term force can be used to describe many types of contact. By examining a range of examples from simple machines to planetary motion, the authors guide the reader through the types of forces and how they interact. For example, a combination of forces controls whether a ship floats in water, and it determines whether a pitch goes over home base in baseball. Wonderful photographs of water striders, roller coasters, hot air balloons, and other items draw the reader into the authors' examples. Helpful diagrams illustrate concepts such as the different types of levers, how a car's brakes work, and how the center of gravity varies depending on the animal. Overall, the combination of cool facts, effective diagrams, and clearly-written text makes this book an outstanding introduction to basic physics. In addition, an excellent glossary, bibliography, and further reading section make it easy for the reader to use this title efficiently. Reviewer: Laura Ruttig
