Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Twelve projects are each explained in a two-page spread with lots of photos showing each step. The projects are based on simple machines such as levers, gears, and pulleys, yet the projects are anything but simple. The culminating project entails making six gears out of cardboard and toothpicks, and mounting those gears so that they transfer the rotation from horizontal to vertical. Most of the projects involve five or six steps and would require the dexterity of a skilled adult assistant. This book could be used by a gifted child who is unusually mechanical, but more likely it will be used in conjunction with an adult. These activities would work well in Big Brothers/Little Brothers programs and boys clubs (girls too). Any one of the projects in this book could be modified for a good science fair project. 2000, Millbrook Press, Ages 8 to 12, $21.90. Reviewer: Seth Berg
