Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of central issues in forensic pathology. Up-to-date knowledge regarding autopsy, immunohistochemistry, bacteriology, DNA techniques, and toxicology is reviewed for common topics that are likely to be encountered in the daily practice of forensic pathologists.
Audience: The book is written primarily for practicing forensic pathologists. However, anyone involved medicolegal work, including investigative agents, could benefit from aspects of this book.
Features: "This book is divided into 13 sections and 15 total chapters. Topics covered include burns, trauma (including trampling injuries and traumatic brain injury), CNS changes in drug abuse, sudden cardiac death, neonaticide, SIDS, infectious disease deaths, odd deaths scenes, HELLP syndrome, resuscitative artifacts, alcohol levels, and iliopsoas hemorrhages. Each chapter starts with a summary followed by well-organized subsections with numerous black-and-white images and tables. The credible authors are from institutes and universities all over the world including, 10 from Germany, four from the U.S., two from Italy, one from Austria, and one from Australia. "
Assessment: This is a wonderful book on forensic pathology and a must-have for forensic pathologists. The book's strength lies in its up-to-date reviews of important forensic concepts. Although no new information is presented, reviewed data is presented in a thorough yet concise format, including some wonderful tables, e.g., the causes of mechanisms of sudden cardiac death table. There seems to be more emphasis on histopathology than in other forensic textbooks. Dr. Tsokos has succeeded in collecting a well-written, comprehensive set of reviews of common forensic pathology issues, a nice addition to every forensic pathologist's library.
