Overview

The forest is home to amazing animals whose bodies are built for living among the trees in cold weather. Black bears, wolverines, loons and other animals all have special ways of keeping warm, finding food and raising their young in a forest habitat with lakes and rivers, short summers and long winters. The Who Lives Here? series looks at animals in their natural habitats — such as tropical and boreal forests, polar regions, deserts and wetlands — and explains how the body and habits of each animal are suited to the place it lives. Charming, realistic illustrations, playful language and intriguing facts make these books a perfect read for young children.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In Forest Animals, Deborah Hodge explores the northern Boreal forest and describes various animals that live there. Young children can learn about black bears—big, powerful animals with long claws and sharp teeth who have baby cubs the size of puppies. The author tells how these bears escape from danger, where they sleep, and what they eat. Small birds called chickadees also live in the forest and are suited to withstand the cold temperatures in the forest. Many other interesting breeds are included in this volume, so young readers can learn about uncommon animals such as lynxes, loons, wolverines, caribou, wood frogs, snowshoe hares, and wolves. The author includes information about how these animals eat, how they care for their young, and how the animals survive the cold temperatures. The realistic illustrations help the reader picture the animals and their environment. The book is clearly written with easy to understand vocabulary for young readers. The back of the book includes a search-and-find activity for readers to look back into the book to find certain pictures of animals. Reviewer: Shelly Shaffer
Quill & Quire
There are thousands of books out there about animals. This one stands out for its carefully chosen details, minimalist text, and engaging illustrations.
