Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD
A beautiful summer day sounds like the perfect time for Jake to go on a forest hike with his family—until he finds out just how tough hiking can be! After he accidentally breaks his compass, slips in a mud puddle, and gets his sandwich stolen by a hungry chipmunk, Jake is ready for a relaxing scavenger hunt with his brother and sister. Too bad his dog takes the opportunity to find a particularly smelly surprise! Can Jake still manage to have a good day? Although billed as "My 1st Graphic Novel," this early reader by Carla Mooney and Steve Harpster reads more like a picture book with word balloons. While Mooney and Harpster make sure Jake gets his obligatory happy ending, very little actually happens in this story to make it a "forest adventure." Kids would be better served by more exciting (and economically priced) comics such as Andy Runton's "Owly" graphic novels, Christian Slade's "Korgi" books, or the numerous "Disney BOOM!" kids comic books. Meet the Author

Steve Harpster has loved to draw funny cartoons, mean monsters, and goofy gadgets since he was able to pick up a pencil. In first grade, he avoided writing assignments by working on the pictures for stories instead. Steve was able to land a job drawing funny pictures for books, and that's really what he's best at. Steve lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wonderful wife, Karen, and their sheepdog, Doodle.
