Overview

For any woman who last saw forty on her speedometer comes a sparkling new primer for aging—the French way—with grace and style. Frenchwomen of a certain age (over forty) are captivating and complex. They appear younger than their years and remain stylish throughout their lives. They look at birthdays as a celebration of a life well-lived and perhaps a good reason to go shopping before they dress to perfection for a celebration of another anniversaire. American-born journalist and blogger Tish Jett has lived among the French for years and has studied them and stalked them to learn their secrets. Exploring how their wardrobe, beauty, diet, and hair rituals evolve with time and how some aspects of their signature styles never change, Jett shows how Frenchwomen know their strengths, hide their weaknesses, and never talk about their fears, failures, or flaws. After all, in France, beauty, style, and charm have no expiration dates!

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
09/01/2013
French women have an enviable reputation for being svelte, sexy, and stylish and for possessing a certain je ne sais quoi that doesn't seem to diminish with age. Fashion journalist and editor Jett reveals how middle-aged French women remain "forever chic" in this detailed look at the diet, skin, hair, makeup, and exercise regimen of la femme d'un certain âge. Like contemporary Francophone beauty authority Jamie Cat Callan, Jett relies on interviews and observations gathered during her stay in France. The author found, as many articles, blogs, and books about the French feminine mystique assert, that culture and confidence play an important role in French women's ability to age gracefully. The French purportedly celebrate older women, are fashion-conscious, control their food portions, and walk more than Americans. However, French women still work hard at maintaining their looks, and this volume provides commonsense and decidedly French head-to-toe beauty routines that yield results. Readers will also learn how to use color, accessories, and figure-flattering clothing to emulate the classic Parisian sense of style. VERDICT This worthwhile and entertaining addition will be popular in libraries where there is an interest in French culture.—Ajoke Kokodoko, Oakland P.L.
Publishers Weekly
This book adds more support to the belief that the French are better at everything—eating, raising children, and of course, efficient application of cosmetics. An American in Paris, Jett was the style editor of the International Herald Tribune and the editor of American Elle. Her research for this book involved observing fashionable friends and visits to French estheticians, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, pharmacists, internists, nutritionists, and personal shoppers. Backed by these experts, Jett doles out advice with exactitude: “I recommend, as do estheticians, that for an intensive, post-pajama winter treatment, we sleep in a layer of the butter. You must have an old pair of sweat bottoms and a T-shirt someplace. Remember your socks. And, do I need to say this? Don’t ever wear that get-up outside the privacy of your own home.” Jett’s comments and sprinklings of French (“Hair Rules: Non, Non, et Non”) give the book a lively personality. Sure, Jett can be downright ridiculous (“Pierre, my personal jeweler...”), but where else can readers peek inside the closets of French women (over age 40, une femme d’un certain age, to whom this book is dedicated, and the name of Jett’s blog) and find such details as “large Hermes scarf as a halter.” Each chapter is indulgent fun. 50 color illus. Forever Chic is more than tips and tricks on being our better physical and stylish selves—it is full of lessons on how to be a better person. The book’s strength lies in its anecdotes and wisdom on how women…can be more present and committed to living a fuller life of kindness, generosity, openness, and adventure.” ~Women’s Voices for Change

"Haven't you always wondered how [the French] can drink all that wine and eat all that beurre and remain slim and silky? Now comes a book that helps explain why. Forever Chic, written by Tish Jett (an American who spent years abroad) shares the secrets of what she calls the French "timeless beauty, style and substance." She spills some of their beauty secrets but also gets to the core of what makes them seem more comfortable in their skin." ~Huffington Post

"Jett’s comments and sprinklings of French give the book a lively personality. Each chapter is indulgent fun." ~Publisher's Weekly

More than a book on style & beauty for the 40+ set, this is a delicious read, start to finish. "Sparkling" comes to mind as one of many appropriate adjectives, as Jett's dry wit and elegant, unselfconscious prose make this primer on French chic pure pleasure.

    Solid, actionable information

I'm a sucker for these "French chic" books (Lessons from Madame Chic, Entre Nous, etc.) and I have to say Forever Chic delivers the most in terms of specific, actionable advice -- especially for women over 40. The author understands what we need to know and is pragmatic about the lives of contemporary women. Plus, although she clearly loves her adopted country and believes French culture offers some advantages to obtaining a polished, attractive appearance that many American women miss out on, she doesn't make the common error of totally romanticizing the French and putting American women down as a bunch of troglodytes. This is one of the more helpful beauty books i've come across.
