Overview

What made one of the most admired heroes of the American Revolution turn to treason? Why is of one of America's greatest communications and public relations geniuses virtually unknown? What drove a furious mob to attack the home of a wealthy Philadelphia businessman, inventor, Revolutionary War veteran, in 1830?

Though you may never have heard the names Margaret Shippen Arnold, Annie Turner Wittenmeyer, and James Forten, they—like the twelve other fascinating people who take center stage in Forgotten Americans—played important roles in the drama of their times. Beyond that, their deeds had a major impact on our national destiny.

In this eye-opening biographical mosaic, Willard Sterne Randall and Nancy Nahra introduce fifteen overlooked heroes and antiheroes of America's past. There's the woman who was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for her unorthodox religious beliefs; the Virginian whose New England travels led to the creation of the maple syrup industry and transformed the economy of Vermont; and the young scholar who laughed at ignorant preachers, then founded America's Evangelical movement.

From an Indian fighter to the original Cleveland Indian, from a feminist to a femme fatale, the book digs deep into history to reveal a colorful, diverse, and yes, unforgettable group of Americans whose achievements, both glorious and inglorious, continue to shape our nation to this very day.
