Lisa Smedman returns to the hellish Demonweb Pits with the first novel in a new trilogy that follows a key character from Wizards of the Coast's War of the Spider Queen saga (Dissolution, Insurrection, Condemnation, et al.). Female drow (dark elf) Halisstra Melarn, a follower of the goddess Eilistraee, was sent on a mission to kill Lolth, the demon queen she once worshipped. The daring assassination attempt failed; Halisstra was transformed into an eight-legged monstrosity by Lolth and has become the nightmarish Lady Penitent. But as the fanatical drow followers of warring goddesses continue to plot attacks on one another's strongholds and ultimately murder enemy deities, a much larger -- and more subtle -- conflict is taking place, with the Lady Penitent as a significant figure: a contest where heroes and demigods are simply pawns and the winner really does take all….
Forgotten Realms fans who are particularly smitten with novels involving the drow (like R. A. Salvatore's Drizzt Do'Urden chronicles) should definitely check out Sacrifice of the Widow, an incredibly fast-paced, delectably dark fantasy that not only explores exciting new narrative ground in the already much-historied drow realm but also opens up numerous potentially jaw-dropping plot threads that will be fleshed out in the trilogy's last two books, titled Storm of the Dead and Ascendancy of the Last. Adventure fantasy fans looking for something extra-dark and ultra-cool need look no further -- this novel kicks serious butt. Paul Goat Allen
