Good To Know

Well, I just turned 50, but I'm still a clean-up hitter on the softball field. A couple of years ago, I found myself in horrible shape and feeling lousy all the time, and so, with the help of my wonderful and beautiful wife of 25 years, I started taking my health seriously again. Now I feel better than I did when I was 40. Fit Camp three times a week and yoga and softball and all the rest.

The other thing that I've come to learn about myself is that R. A. Salvatore and Bobby Salvatore are two different people (and I much prefer Bobby, thank you very much). It's not that I lie to readers at book signings, or anything like that, it's just that the things that are important to me are the little things in life: my family, my home. Writing is what I do, but it's not who I am. I remember one time about 20 years ago, I went back to where I had worked to see my brother, who still worked there. Gary was a few years older, and was, of course, my hero. An associate found us in the parking lot and nudged my brother, asking him what it felt like to have a younger brother who was so much more successful than he.

Gary, of course, took it all in stride, turning what might have been an awkward moment into a joke. Gary died a few years later and I'll never forget the lines of mourners -- grown men crying like babies. He was such a big part of the community, as a friend and a coach to so many kids over the years.

That brought me back to the parking lot and the awkward moment, and the truth of it all: I was not and have never been more successful than my brother, and nothing I can do as a writer will get me there. Only the things I do as a human being, a father, a neighbor, a friend, can bring me into his league.

Disapointed

The book delved deeper into Artemis Enteri's past and gave greater insight into the development of his character. However the rest of the storyline seemed weak and rushed. There were very few action scenes, which was suprising considering how Artemis and Jaraxle seem to find a fight in any situation, as in the other novels they were in. Overall I felt that Salvatore didn't put much effort into this one.

After disabling the Zhengyian Construct in the shape of Castle Perilus ruled by a drcoliche and inhabited by gargoyles and other dangerous creatures, the assassin Artemis Entreri is awarded by King Gareth of Bloodstone with the Knight of the Order his companion Jarlaxle is named a Bloodstone hero. The drow dark elf and Artemis are the furthest thing from heroes imaginable as the human does not have a heart and the drow lusts for power and adventure.----------------- After receiving their rewards, Artemis has a run in with the Assassins Guild. He and his companions run for their lives before reclaiming the castle and restoring it using magic. The elf claims the land of Vaasa renaming it D¿Aerthe ruled by King Artemis I. King Gareth and his army march to defeat the usurper because he wants to make Vaasa a barony of his kingdom. The elf knows his side cannot win so he retreats to his homeland while Artemis is exiled with the drow coming to rescue him.---------------------------- Although Jarlaxle is selfish, he finds himself genuinely fond of Artemis, which is why he used magic and an ensorcelled artifact to let him feel again. There is plenty of action, political intrigue, and battles in this spellbinding tale. The Sellswords Chronicles has a special feel to them as the supernatural seem natural whether they be dragons in human form, drows or gargoyles. R. A. Salvatore provides another strong sword and sorcery saga that demonstrates his exceptional world building skills.------------------ Harriet Klausner

This, the third book in the trilogy, is not as good as the second was. R.A. Salvatore tries to explain why Entreri is the way he is, by going all the way back to his childhood, and the town he grew up in. Throughout the whole book, Entreri and Jarlaxle find themselves caught between Spysong and the Citadel of Assassins, but never really committing to either. Calihye and Entreri relationship is still ongoing. Entreri is for the first time opening his heart up for another, because of the aid of Idalia's flute. Calihye is caught between actually falling in love with Entreri, and her revenge for her friend Parissus, (lesbian lover?!). With the help of Kimmuriel and House Bregan D'aerthe, Jarlaxle tries to establish a foothold for the drow on the World Above. Jarlaxle claims Entreri as King Artemis the First of the "unclaimed" Castle D'aerthe, formally the replica of Castle Perilous near the half-orc city of Palishchuk. This not only costs them the loyalty of Palishchuk, but forces King Gareth to raise his army against them! Deep down I hoped that Jarlaxle would prevail, but it is King Gareth who is the victor when he captures King Artemis the First. The conversations between both kings results in King Gareth becoming a better king for his kingdom. With no proof, only speculation, Jarlaxle, Entreri, and Athrogate are exiled. I'm still very fond of Athrogate. He's a great character throughout the books!

Wow!

What a way to end a trilogy with the two most intriguing anti-heroes of all time. Entreri and Jarlaxle are both deep and rare for their kind, but they do seem to have some sort of a moral code that defies logic. With their pairing to Athrogate, the impossibly old, rhyming, alcoholic dwarven warrior, they begin a new adventure when Entreri refuses to be used as a pawn. Causing a war with the Citadel of Assassins. But, Entreri, Jarlaxle, and Athrogate prove formidable as well as interesting as the story forms. I was enthralled, and greatly enjoyed this trilogy.

I'll use my fire of wrath

to smite this mediocre offering. salvatore should go back to the drawing board, kill off the cliche Enteri, and let Jarlaxle go it alone. The stories would be better for it. Oh, wait, he can't kill off Enteri, his publishers will not allow him. Sorry, R. A.

Ohhh yeah!

Almost as good as Servant of The Shard! A great close to the trilogy. One tht tells a great deal about Assasin Artemis Entreri. Plots and more big name charachters... enough to create more stories with. I was left wondering about Entreris future. Jarlaxle seems to have a new friend and a new path. Plenty of trouble left in the path of this duo or trio. Plenty in front as well! Long anticipated and well enjoyed.

Awesome!

This is an outstanding book. I absolutely could not put this down. R.A. is one heck of a writer. I can not recommend this book enough. Action packed and full of twists and turns. Jarlaxle is one sneaky SOB! I loved this book.

Excellent

This book was an excellent tale that 'finalized' the deepest character I've ever read, The anti-hero assasin Artemis Entreri's growth over the years has reached it's zenith in this great book. The book reads extremely well too, a page turner that cannot be surrendered until it's done, all the neccessary components of a great fantasy read too, dragons, wizards , kings, dark elves and a multitude of sub-plots and characters that could've spawn books themselves. I give this book a 20 on a scale of 1-10
