Meet the Author

R.A. Salvatore
R.A. Salvatore
R. A. Salvatore was born in Massachusetts in 1959. His first published novel was The Crystal Shard. He has since published more than a dozen novels, including the New York Times bestsellers The Halfling's Gem, Sojourn, The Legacy, and Starless Night. He makes his home in Massachusetts with his wife, Diane, and their three children.

Good To Know

Well, I just turned 50, but I'm still a clean-up hitter on the softball field. A couple of years ago, I found myself in horrible shape and feeling lousy all the time, and so, with the help of my wonderful and beautiful wife of 25 years, I started taking my health seriously again. Now I feel better than I did when I was 40. Fit Camp three times a week and yoga and softball and all the rest.

The other thing that I've come to learn about myself is that R. A. Salvatore and Bobby Salvatore are two different people (and I much prefer Bobby, thank you very much). It's not that I lie to readers at book signings, or anything like that, it's just that the things that are important to me are the little things in life: my family, my home. Writing is what I do, but it's not who I am. I remember one time about 20 years ago, I went back to where I had worked to see my brother, who still worked there. Gary was a few years older, and was, of course, my hero. An associate found us in the parking lot and nudged my brother, asking him what it felt like to have a younger brother who was so much more successful than he.

Gary, of course, took it all in stride, turning what might have been an awkward moment into a joke. Gary died a few years later and I'll never forget the lines of mourners -- grown men crying like babies. He was such a big part of the community, as a friend and a coach to so many kids over the years.

That brought me back to the parking lot and the awkward moment, and the truth of it all: I was not and have never been more successful than my brother, and nothing I can do as a writer will get me there. Only the things I do as a human being, a father, a neighbor, a friend, can bring me into his league.

    The Icewind Dale Trilogy

Outstanding book. I read this book first and became so interested in Drisst Do'Urden that really found it hard to put the book down. The author does an outstanding job of keeping you interested.

    Fantastically written

This edition contains books 4,5 and 6 for this series. Again I find this to be a fast read that has left me ready for more adventure. I'm really trying hard to think of something I don't like but I just cant think of a single thing. When it comes to Drizzt Do'urden(main character) I'm a big fan. While you could read this without reading 1,2 and 3 I would recommend against it

    Amazingly done

The book is absolutely wonderful it fill your mind with adventure, excitement, and fantasy of all kinds. Reading this book can take you in for hours and hours on end. I personally think the book is pure genious though this is the first book ive read by the auther i already love the style in which he writes and how he put details into important things it makes the story seem all the more real. I love it so much I think about reading it a second time just to experiance the story again and though i will already know what happens the book will seem like ive just read it the first time it is truly magical in Epic proportions

A Sweeping Tome of High Adventure

Those familiar with Drizzt and his comrades will not be disappointed with this omnibus edition of the three Icewind Dale novels from Bob Salvatore. I'd read each of them individually years ago, but I had decided to obtain the various "Legend of Drizzt" compilation collector books as I knew this would be a story I'd revisit many times.

As ever, Salvatore's writing carries the story and reader swiftly along, and even the characterizations of the lesser players are in-depth enough to lend them weight in his world. The only criticism of the overall narrative would be to have heard more of the final clearing of the Duergar from Mithral Hall.

Interestingly, given that I'm a stickler for the language, I came across many punctuation and usage errors in the manuscript. I don't have my paperback versions of the individual novels any longer, but I certainly don't seem to recall there being quite the preponderance of these kinds of errors when I first read these novels. I'm not sure how these occurred, but certainly those sorts of errors don't give a good impression for readers.

    Good as it gets

Great series...again. I love all of the characters, even the bad guys. I have only recently begun reading Fantasy (last few years) and have only had to sift through a few crappy fantasy novels...this was not one and I will be reading all of Salvatore's work!

    Awesome Fantasy Read!!

Technically this is the second installment of the Drizzt Do'Urden saga and the Forgotten Realms even though it was written first. I am not a "gamer" by any stretch of the imagination, so I came across the Forgotten Realms by a different route...a used book store. And, unlike most fans, I read the books in chronological order rather than publishing date. This I highly recommend, as the first trilogy highlights events only hinted at in the IceWind Dale Trilogy.

This trilogy highlights the adventures in the IceWind Dale of dark elf, Drizzt Do'Urden and his few, but dear friends: Cattie-brie, Wulfgar, Regis, Bruenor, and Guenhwyvar. The friends must come together to battle an insidious artifact, the Chrystal Shard.

What I like about the IceWind Dale Trilogy, and indeed the entire series, is the contradictions present in the lead characters. Drizzt is a warrior, but he is also a philosopher. He is from an evil race among the Realms, but he is a warrior for good. The other characters are likewise as complex.

Moreover, through his characters, R.A. Salvatore is able to insert some very deep themes into a seemingly shallow medium. Most readers seem to enjoy fantasy for its magic, extraordinary characters, and the inevitable fight scenes. Believe me, in these, Salvatore delivers! But he is also able to examine the nature of love, explore the importance of friendship, and reveal the ultimate truth that good and evil exist in all of us.

    Amazing!

I find no flaw in this story whatsoever. I was first turned on to this book through the computer game "Icewind Dale", which oddly enough I never have played but knew enough about it to be pretty interested. Upon reading the "Icewind Dale Trilogy", I am a definite fan. I found it futile to stop reading this book. Impossible scenarios, remarkable characters (both good and evil, man and beast), amazing storytelling, richly imaginative adventures in an unforgiving part of the Realms, etc. This trilogy has everything a fantasy/adventure lover could ever ask for. Sit down and take the time to endulge yourself in a true masterpiece!

Really Good Book for this Genre

I'm partial to the Dragonlance Series, but I have enjoyed this journey thru the Forgotten Realms! Some really unforgettable characters, especially Drizzt plus R.A. Salvatore's writing is top-notch. He really knows how to weave these kind of stories in a way that makes you keep reading & anticipating what's going to happen next. Overall, a good read!

    if you read the originals.....

do not bother with this. If you are a new reader, check out the dark elf trilogy first! Warning!!!! the first section of this compilation, entitled: The Crystal Shard, sucks. the rest is good. Sections two and three have MUCH improved writing, character development, and dialogue.

R.A. Salvatore books featuring the Character Drizzt

My son is an avid reader and has requested books written by R. A. Salvatore featuring the character Drizzt. However, I don't know about this writer or his books. Can anyone help me by letting me know what order his books were written and if I can buy a set of paperbacks?

    Thank you in advance.

    Introduction

This was the first book Salvatore wrote of Drizzt. I liked this book when I first read it but the rest of the series is far better. If you were a reader who wanted to start at the beginning start with these books. Next is The Dark Elf Trilogy (even though it deals with Drizzt's birth it is not first), Legacy of the Drow, Paths of Darkness, etc. etc.

So Confused, Which order do Salvatore's books about Drizzt Do'Urden go in?

I just finished Homeland and Exile, I'll soon be done with Sojourn too. All were phenominal and adicting as hell!! But in homeland Drizzt was just being born and nearly sacrificed to Lolth, so I'm confused as to how this book claims to have introduced him instead of Homeland. Also based on the other comments from reviewers like myself, it seems I'm not reading these books in order. What order does Salvatore's series go in from start to finish? Can anyone tell me?

    I WANT MORE!!

I started Reading R.A. Salvatore's books OUT OF ORDER (I started with Homeland, but then read The Thousand Orcs and The Two Swords.....) But I am finaly reading the right books and filling in the missing peices.......I loved the Icewind Dale trilogy, even though the second book, Streams of Silver, seemed a little bit like the Hobbit...........I still loved all three. I go around quoting the books, and people say, ' let me guess....you're quoting those Drizzt books again.' RAS's stuff is the BEST!!

this book was outstanding and most descriptive.

    R. A Salvatore is one of the best writers in the century. the characters relate so much to the emotions and feelings we alll have and his description of everything in here is amazingly awe- inspiring. if you want something with feeling, emotion, adventure, war, and a great story of affection and understanding then these are the books you want to read.
