Richard Lee Byers has created a compelling character in Szass Tam. He wants to make Thay a more united nation. You may be thinking, "What's not to like?". Well, he's a Lich; the most powerful of Forgotten Realms undead. The only shortcoming of this novel would be that it has to be read as part of a trilogy. It is not a stand alone work. If you like Fantasy Swords and Sorcery with some horror thrown in; this is the book for you. The Haunted Lands trilogy has not only solid plot development but decent characterization as well.

Overall one of the better series that I have read in a while. The author creates a exceptionally good view of the world in which it takes place which I take particular liking to. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.

Just a lot of fun. Always enjoy following a band of "adventurers" that keep you engaged, attached and looking forward to the next monster.

Nice plot. Not many real twists because its still a developing story. Lots of interesting developments though. Seems like his early books in a series spend a lot in development. I do prefer that eventhough you are developing characters, if a book ends something should be concluded. Some intelectual puzzle or mystery should be solved. No "whys" were answered. Byers seems to save this only for the final book. So all-in-all it could be better.

This is the first opportunity I've had to read Richard Byers work. Well done. I am always looking for new Fantasy authors. I believe I may have found one worth following.
