Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

"The end of the stars draws near. Three must become four to battle the darkness that last forever." The fissures between the warrior Clans have become almost irreparable, but they grow even deeper with the arrival of an outsider. With questions of trust and treachery festering everywhere, the warrior cats clench their teeth and hope desperately for safe passage.

Children's Literature - Kim Harris Thacker
Tensions between clans are rising in the fifth book in the "Warriors: Omen of the Stars" series, and no cat can put a paw out of line without his clanmates wondering where his loyalties lie. Yet secrets abound, especially in ThunderClan, for a prophecy states that it is only through the powers of four ThunderClan cats that the lake clans can win the battle against the Dark Forest. Three of the four prophecy cats have been identified: Medicine cat Jayfeather can appear to cats in their dreams and can also read their memories and emotions, warrior Lionblaze can't be harmed in battle, and warrior Dovewing can hear at incredible distances. But these three aren't the only ThunderClan cats with secrets. Ivypool spies in the Dark Forest and discovers some of her clanmates there, and Cinderheart learns that in a former life, she was a medicine cat. All these secrets can only lead to turmoil within ThunderClan and to a battle between clans. When Dovewing hears Sol, a rogue cat, telling WindClan that ThunderClan plans to attack, the situation seems bleak...until a forgotten warrior arrives to lead ThunderClan into battle. Not since Brian Jacques' "Redwall" series has such an enormous cast of animal characters been handled so well; yet where Jacques' books blur the line between what is animal and what is human, with mice toting swords, Hunter's cats are pure feline. Character development seems to be the purpose of this book, as the series' plot does not progress enough to warrant such a lengthy novel, complete with maps and character lists. Fans of the series will enjoy the Adventure Game at the end of the book. Reviewer: Kim Harris Thacker

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    I can't wait!

I'm 17 years old and I still read these books! My thoughts on the Forgotten Warrior: Well, it could be a cat from the old forest from another Clan. Or Ravenpaw, but then it wouldn't match up with the cat on the cover. Unless the cat on the cover is just a picture of a cat.

I bet this book is going to be AWESOME

i think the forgotten warrior isn't Hollyleaf because Hollyleaf was black and this cat is a tabby i think so it could be Fallen Leaves but then it could be another cat from one of the other clans also so you cant really tell who the forgotten warrior is. Hopefully this book is as good as the other books. i bet it will be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

    Love the warrior cats!

I love this book series! Irradiated the firsthand second series in less than 3 months. People say the forgotten warrior is holly leaf. But the cat on the cover looks like heather tail. But it can't be cause heather tail has blue eyes. I don't know who it could be. I can't think of one. It could also be a river, wind,or shadow clan warrior and not just a thunderclan. I'm trying to think. I will have to get back to it though! :) can't wait for the book! I love the book series! Reading crooked stars prophecy in the mean time, can't wait! Also soo far great series and crooked stars prophecy is a good bok and I'm on 132pg! Read it! It's good!

    Warriors the real review

This is like the only comment that isn't about morons making up dumb clan joining requests. The warriors series is an action packed series filled with mystery and danger. I espically favor RiverClan because it is the nicest clan. If you like cats and adventure, the warriors series is the one to read. Erin hunter is actually four women but the warriors series is still the best series i have ever read.

    Okugh

Blinking awake, Brambleflame found himself in the warriors' den, his mate, Wolfclaw next to him. The deputy of RiverClan was sending a hunting party of Willowfur, Scourge, Rosetail, and Blueheart. Bright sunlight casted over the streams and rivers of RiverClan camp. Scenting the air, a warm smell of prey rushed through Brambleflame's nose. Dropping into a hunting crouch, Brambleflame stalked a water vole, pounced on it, and killed it swiftly. Clenching his jaw firmly on his prey, he dragged it to the fresh-kill pile and dropped it. The RiverClan leader, Mousestar was in his den. Brambleflame dashed into it and padded to where Mousestar was sitting. Mousestar dipped his head. "Hello, Brambleflame," he meowed. "Greetings, Mousestar," the tabby tom replied. "Why don't you lead a patrol of Hawktalon and Fawntail?" Mousestar asked. "Ok," Brambleflame replied, padding outside. He was padding when he heard a scream of agony and pain. Yowling, Brambleflame rushed up to the medicine den, prepared to kill the enemy. He found Mapleleaf's body sprawled out, motionless and limp. Gazing up, Brambleflame saw Willowfur, blood soaking her fur and lapping at her paws. "BloodClan is where I belong," Willowfur mewed. Brambleflame looked to see Mapleleaf's body stir as she rose. Willowfur winced as Mapleleaf scattered drops of blood off het pelt. "What just happened?" Mapleleaf demanded. "I prevented you from telling the secret, thats what," Willowfur hissed. Brambleflame launched himself at Willowfur and his weight slammed on her as he pinned her. Willowfur's dog teeth reinforced claws dug into Brambleflame's throat and she flipped him off. Willowfur was Scourge's mate and you could see why. Padding off, Brambleflame decided not to tell Mousestar
