Fort Douaumont's most significant
It is estimated that during the 11 months over which the battle of Verdun took place there were 700,000 casualties and yet the area over which the battle was fought covered a front of less than 10 kilometers. The French Army has never experienced greater sacrifice and today Verdun remains the focus of France's WW1 commemorations.
Fort Douaumont's most significant part in the battle came after 9 months of fighting, in October 1916 when, following a highly successful bombardment by the French forces, the German forces were compelled to retreat from the Fort, or what was left of it. During the assault French forces fired 240,000 grenades per day over 3 days.
