Overview

For Tommy Jarvis, life has never been simple - quite the opposite, in fact. It is, however, about to become decidedly more difficult. Moments after stumbling through a doorway to another world, Tommy and his friends discover they are the key to ending a war in which the casualties are too great to count and their chances of survival are almost nonexistent.

After stumbling through a doorway hidden at the base of their tree fort, the brothers find themselves caught in the middle of a war that has raged for years and left behind more causalities than numbers dare count. Along the way they'll encounter creatures both bizarre and terrifying and find friends in the most unpredictable of places.

Fathers and Sons is the first in a trilogy that follows an unlikely group of children turned heroes and their adventures in a world that has nothing in common with their own, against an army of war mongering creatures led by a tyrant king and a young prince that will stop at nothing to see them dead.

The Forts series continues with Forts: Liars and Thieves, and Forts: Endings and Beginnings

Praise for Fathers and Sons

5 of 5 Stars!

"No one should miss out on this series. It sticks with you long after the final page is turned." - Completelybooksessed

"What you don't expect are those singing moments of poetry, of beauty, and the life lessons woven behind every chapter. Novak isn't just trying to tell you a fantastic adventure story. Novak is trying to teach you something about himself, and, by extension, something about you." - MJ Heiser, Author of Corona

"There are moments along their journey, and even before it starts, where you simply want to cry for these children and what they go through. There are also those moments where you will find yourself cheering them along." - Moonlitreviews

"Novak skillfully spins his tale in a manner that allows the reader to understand and empathize with his protagonists and keeps the reader engaged in the narrative from the opening paragraph to the final lines." - UJA Greater Toronto

"What struck me about Fathers and Sons is that each character, hero and villain, human or otherwise, is so clearly drawn (Mr. Novak is an illustrator of exceptional talent)that I was able to connect with them. Family is an important theme in this action-packed story, with both good and bad aspects getting equal share." - James McShane, Author

Meet the Author

Born in Chicago Illinois, Steven Novak has spent the whole of his life creating. After attending The Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus Ohio for four years he moved to California where he married his wife and grade school teacher, Tamara. The pair have been together for nearly a decade. While working as a freelance illustrator and graphic artist, with occasional product and web design, he produced several successful blogs and began to slowly piece together the story that would eventually become "Forts." The first in a series of three, "Forts: Fathers and Sons" is an intensely personal piece of fantasy that intertwines aspects of horror and science fiction as well. Written as a trilogy the second in the series is due out in 2011, and the third a year later. His work can be found online at www.novakillustration.com

    Forts: A must read!

I found "Forts, Fathers and Sons" to be a delightful story. The reader is immediately involved in the lives of the main characters before they are thrust upon a journey which forever changes their lives. Like Alice and her adventures through the looking glass, the children are caught up in the machinations of war and conquest as they try to find their way home. Alien creatures, prophesies, strange powers and magic promises a thrilling ride. A must read!

    Forts: Fathers and Sons

    *4.5 stars*

I wan't sure of this one before reading, because it is not my normal read. I am very glad I took it on now. FORTS: Fathers and Sons is about a group of kids finding themselves in the middle of a war of a different world (or worlds). This story has magical powers, prophesies, new breeds of creatures, and all the other things I expect to find in a fantasy. But there was something much more hidden between the covers of FORTS: Fathers and Sons.

Mixed in with this epic fantasy we find characters with realistic problems. It was more more emotional than I expected. I wasn't expecting the story to touch on things like domestic abuse, but is does, and it does a wonderful job at it. Each character, even the non-human ones, had their own past and background story that they brought to the table. I really enjoyed getting to know each one of them.

The universe that Novak has created is so large. There are so many places, and so many creatures to discover. I was reminded of Star Wars for this reason. In Star Wars, there is potential for anything to happen. There are surreal surprises around every corner, but that is just the norm for the Star Wars universe. The FORTS universe works the same way. There is no way you could cover it all in one book. There is so much room for this story to go, and that makes me excited to continue on in this series.

Novak is a great writer that can keep his readers engaged. My only complaint would be the minor errors with the grammar. The story could use the keen eye of a good editor. But it wasn't enough to distract me from the story.

I really enjoyed the ending. It has me eager for the sequel, Liars and Thieves. FORTS is an abnormal world with a human heart. It's the type of book you can get lost in. Novak has come in and proved that sometimes, nothing beats a good old fashioned epic fantasy.

    Beginning with a Bang!

Steven Novak creates a dizzying swirl of the best and worst of every childhood. With a blend of features from beloved movies only distantly remembered as favorites over the years, he merges it all into a palatable whole all his own. One might assume a grim reality being born within the pages of Forts, but the reader is rewarded with insights into changing destiny and overcoming any situation no matter how horrible.
