Children's Literature - Carollyne Hutter
One of these statements is true: scientists can learn about all the world's extinct animals by studying fossils; dinosaurs had been extinct for more than 60 million years before humans first developed. To find out which one is true, the reader explores the topic of fossils. The book is organized into five chapters: clues from the past; preserved in stone; a sticky situation; here, there, and everywhere; and learning from fossils. It explores such topics digging up fossils, becoming a fossil, animals' fossils in tree sap, and learning from fossils. There are special sections on the return of the woolly mammoth and Mary Anning, a famous fossil Hunter from the 1800s. Glossy colorful photographs capture the world of fossils and dinosaurs. The book closes with a list of true statistics about minerals and a list of books for further information. At the end of the book it tells which opening statement is true. As part of the "A True Book" series this title can be used in science and geology units either alone or with other geology books in the series. Reviewer: Carollyne Hutter
