School Library Journal - School Library Journal
ea. vol: 30p. (Venture Into Reading Series). CIP. Troll. July 1985. PLB $7.59; pap. $1.95. Gr 1-4 For young or slow readers who most need these basic level books, the format defeats the purpose. The information is impossible to find, as there are no chapters, headings or indexes. Caves gives basic information about caves, but Brandt fails to warn would-be explorers of the inherent dangers of entering caves without adequate preparation or knowledge. In addition, the illustrations show unsupervised children exploring the caves. An excellent substitute is Kerbo's Caves (Childrens, 1981), with its interesting photographs and research-oriented style. Fossils is a story-like narrative that gives basic facts about the formation, discovery and preservation of fossil materials. The cartoon-like illustrations are sometimes out of scale and are decorative rather than informative. Curtis' Fossils (Watts, 1984) is a much better beginning book with easily obtainable information and illustrations of value. Those needing simple factual material would do better to look elsewhere, as these two books have very little value. Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Nassau Spackenkill School Lib . , Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
